MSDN Academic Alliance Program

Introduction

The MSDN Academic Alliance Program enables eligible students and faculty members to access and download software available under the program. Example of software that is available under this program:

Note that Microsoft Office is not available under this program. The Faculty of Engineering (including SEECS), the Telfer School of Management and possibly other departments subscribe to this program.

As a student who is enrolled in one of the courses of those departments, you may qualify to participate in this program and download software from e-academy, Microsoft's partner responsible for the software delivery infrastructure.

Accounts

New Accounts

New accounts are created (and old ones removed) at the beginning of each term. At that time, a notification of your username and password will be sent to your @uOttawa.ca1 email address. This automated notification is sometimes treated as spam and blocked. If you did not receive this notification, or if you lost it, visit the Password Reminder of your faculty or department:

provide your @uOttawa.ca email address as username and click on the Submit button. Within minutes, you will receive your password via email. The same procedure works also if you have forgotten your MSDNAA password. You can visit the link below (Downloading) and login using your username (@uOttawa.ca email address) and your (newly received) password.

ELMS/MSDNAA passwords only work on the ELMS/MSDNAA website

The ELMS/MSDNAA password system is completely independent from any password system used on the campus. For security reasons, you should not even try one of your campus passwords on ELMS/MSDNAA. The passwords used on campus cannot and will not work on ELMS/MSDNAA.

Downloading

ELMS/MSDNAA Sites

Software packages are downloaded from the e-academy site of your faculty or department:

The downloader file does not run; what should I do?

After selecting the software you want, start downloading it; you will obtain a downloader file.

This is a small executable file (~400 Kb). If you use a browser other than Internet Explorer, the .EXE file name extension can get deleted and prevent you from launching that file; you simply need to rename the file with the .EXE extension to solve the problem.

You need to run this executable to authenticate yourself to the ELMS/MSDNAA server from where you will download the actual software package.

Installation

Most software downloads are now in ISO format which becomes usable after burning it onto a CD/DVD ROM before installing the software product. Alternatively, you can use the freeware mentionned below to install the downloaded ISO files without having to burn it onto a CD.

Product Key

Most software will require you to enter the product key provided just prior to downloading the software. Don't forget to take note of this number. Once installed, you will be able to keep the software even after you have completed your courses. Note that at that time, you will no longer be able to download more products.

How do I install the product that I've just downloaded?

The end product of the e-academy software downloads used to be EXE files which merely needed to be executed in order to proceed with the installation of the software products. But more recently, the software downloaded from e-academy tends to be a large ISO file (i.e. a CD or a DVD image), such that the Launch Installation step now usually seem to fail because such an ISO file is not executable but rather writable (to CD, that is). That's not to say that the installation cannot be done.

A few ways to install the software from such an ISO file are as summarized below.

Using the ISO file directly

There are a few ways to deal with the ISO file without having to burn it to CD/DVD.

Extract the content of the ISO file

Using an ISO extracting tool like ISOBuster or an archiving tool like ZipGenius (both can be found for free on the web), the content of the ISO file can be extracted in a given directory, from where the installation program (e.g. setup.exe) can be ran.

Mount the ISO file

Some tools allow to directly access the content of an ISO file by making it appear as a CD/DVD to the operating system. The following tools offer that capability:

Once the ISO mounting tool has been installed, use the contextual menu (right mouse button) of Windows Explorer on the ISO file and select "Mount Virtual CD". Afterward, you will have access to the content of the ISO file as if it were an actual CD/DVD. Browse to it and run the installation program (e.g. setup.exe).
