Dean, Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies

Gary Slater was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies January 1, 2005.

Biography: 

In 1984, after receiving his PhD from Université de Sherbrooke, Gary Slater worked for six years at the Xerox Research Centre of Canada in Mississauga. In 1990 he joined the Department of Physics at the University of Ottawa, where, in 1996, he was named professor. From July 1997 to December 2000, Professor Slater was vice-dean (research) of the Faculty of Science. He was vice-dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies from January 2002 to June 2004. He has been dean of that faculty since January 2005.

Dr. Slater is a specialist in the physics of polymers and macromolecules. He is also interested in computer simulations and the application of the theory of diffusion in biophysics. In 2001, he received the Researcher of the Year Award from the University of Ottawa. He was named the University of Ottawa Research Chair in Biological Physics in 2004.In December 2009, he was elected a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS).

Dr. Slater is a member of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Advisory Committee, which reviews the council’s grant selection process; a member of the Executive Committee, Ontario Council on Graduate Studies; and a member of the board of trustees of the High Performance Computing Virtual Laboratory.
