MEMORANDUM

SUBJECT: New Supplier for PC Purchases

We are pleased to announce that the University of Ottawa has signed a new agreement for personal computers (PC) purchases with DELL Canada.

DELL:

All new computers and notebooks will now be ordered from DELL. The University of Ottawa already has a “Dell Premier” Web site ready to take orders.  Since we will be ordering from DELL online, accounts will have to be created prior to using the site. More information on account creation will be provided on our Web site. Orders over $5,000.00 will continue to be funneled through Materials Management Services.

The University of Ottawa’s common operating environment (COE) has already been ported over to work with DELL equipment, thus, users will continue to receive a standard software image with each computer.

Computers for personal use will be available on a separate Web site. This Web site will enable staff to purchase computers with a major credit card or use other financing options available from DELL directly. Please visit Computing and Communications Services PC Purchases Web site for more details.

Lenovo:

Due to unexpected problems relating to a back-end upgrade to SAP, Lenovo was unable to keep up with the University of Ottawa’s requirements for computing equipment over the period of November 2007 to April 2008. Several delays and order issues resulted from this disruption and forced the University of Ottawa to look at our 2nd place vendor from our Request for Proposals of 2005 for the purchase of personal computers (DELL).

Lenovo and the University of Ottawa will continue to maintain a good working relationship, however, we will only be purchasing Lenovo accessories and options for already-owned equipment (i.e. dock stations, extra batteries for notebooks). We will no longer be ordering computers or notebooks. For those with Research funding or CFI, Lenovo still remains an option for these items, however, DELL equipment will be recommended from now on.

The University of Ottawa will no longer be ordering Lenovo equipment via its “Direct” ordering model.  Northern Micro will be the sole provider of Lenovo equipment. Details on how to order will be posted on our PC Purchases Web site.
