From the infancy of computer science to the digital dominance of today, INRIA's history dates back more than forty years. We look back at the four key periods in INRIA's history.

Ever since it first began, INRIA has made use of an original research model founded on a basic entity:the project-team.This model is the component that structures the institute’s research activities.Made up of around 20 individuals, the project-team is formed around a “scientific leader”, who defines scientific objectives on a topic approved by the institute.

"HPC-SME Initiative" is the name of the program jointly launched by GENCI, INRIA, and OSEO, in partnership with four global competitiveness clusters, to facilitate and encourage access to High Performance Computing for SMEs.

At INRIA, technological development is intrinsically linked to scientific research and it thus forms the basis of a specific effort within the institute. The technological development department, in coordination with the scientific departments, transforms the milestones of the strategic plan into national objectives, and coordinates the technological activities and projects.

In order to boost technology transfers to SMEs and SMIs, INRIA has established the I-Labs system. The idea is to bring together an INRIA project team and a partner SME in a joint laboratory. The two entities define a joint, specific work program lasting two to three years. Incentives are given by INRIA to the project team involved, while the SME can receive government assistance to finance its research project (particularly the research tax credit).

Ultimately, the innovation capacity of these SMEs must be reinforced, with an increase in their R&D recruitments and technology transfers.

The strategic partnerships that INRIA establishes are long-term bilateral partnerships with large industrial groups, formalized in a framework agreement. A research program is developed jointly by INRIA and its partner based on the industrial player’s proposed priority topics. Research projects, fitting into this program, are then developed jointly by INRIA’s teams and the partner. In addition, a steering committee and a scientific committee ensure that the collaboration is consistent and runs smoothly.
