Thinking ahead to 2011-2012
The Centre for Global and Community Engagement and the Human Resources Department, in collaboration with the UNITERRA Leave for Change staff are now preparing for their second recruitment campaign. Two information sessions will be held in the month of May for staff.
The proposed 2011-2012 application calendar is as follows:
- Information Session:
- August 24, 2011 – Tabaret Hall, Room 303, 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
- Opening of Applications: August 15th, 2011
- Deadline for Applications: September 30th, 2011
- Shortlist Announcement: Early October, 2011
- Interviews of Prospective Candidates: End of October, 2011
- Announcement of Selected Volunteers: Early November, 2011
- Pre-departure training: Mid November, 2011
- Overseas volunteering: January-March, 2012

Uniterra's Leave for Change - Welcome back
The 2011 Leave for Change participants share their experience
This program enables you to volunteer during your vacation time (or "annual leave") for two to four weeks in a developing country. Uniterra works with local partner organizations in a variety of sectors to provide volunteer opportunities where you can use your knowledge and skills in international development. Winners for the 2010-2011 Leave for Change program are: After a call for application which ended in October 2010, the University of Ottawa in collaboration with Uniterra screened applications for suitable matches with posted vacancies, interviewed short-listed candidates and selected participants in accordance with Uniterra’s process. The four selected applicants this year are:

Jonathan Rausseo, Sustainable Development Manager, Physical Resources service will be traveling to Sénégal in March 2011 to work in the area of waste management in partnership with ALPHADEV. ALPHADEV is a Senegalese grassroots organization that is working in the sectors of education and training, literacy, female and male equality, health, the environment, small business development and other social development. Recently, ALPHADEV has begun to focus on education and training to reduce and diminish the risks associated with environmental disasters. It is within this area that Jonathan will undertake his mandate. He will work with peri-urban municipalities to identify current and potential environmental challenges, as well as design and present workshops on sustainable development, waste management and the mitigation of the identified environmental challenges. |

Amelia Hope, Head of Language Testing Services, Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI) will be traveling to Vietnam in March to work as an English Second Language Trainer at the Ha Tay Community College as part of an overall program to strengthen the skills of youth to increase their professional possibilities in the labour market in Vietnam. The Skills Training for the Labour Market (STLM) project is based on strengthening the skills of staff in 7 community colleges across Vietnam. Amelia will develop, design and deliver a training program for staff in the Faculty of Foreign Languages in the area of student centered learning, plus provide a communicative English training for primary teachers to improve their ESL teaching skills in various formats such as English Olympics, English clubs etc. |

Philippe-Thierry Douamba, Financial Analyst, Financial Services, will be traveling to Burkina Faso in late June to work as a financial and administrative management consultant for the national NGO, Confédération Paysanne du Faso (CPF). The latter is a peasant organization that gathers one million members. The CPF, whose headquarters are situated in Ouagadougou, intervenes in the fields of agriculture, livestock, forestry and rural development. The objective of the CPF is, firstly, to represent the organized producers before the policy makers, technical and financial partners and; secondly, to raise the political discourse and work to influence agricultural policies and rural development in Burkina Faso. |

Amélie Deschênes, Operations Coordinator, Sociology and Anthropology Department will be traveling to Botswana in March to work as a Finance Advisor with WAR : Women against Rape. Woman Against Rape encourages all South Africans to exercise their rights by teaching them that their bodies and spirits are sacred. No other person may violate these rights in any manner. In the event of violation or abuse, all South African victims have a right to be heard and counseled through empathetic and skilled care . Amélie will strengthen this organizations' capacity to develop a budget plan, identify and document successes, gaps and challenges in pre-existing financial structures and to identify new potential sources of funding. |
The Employees selected will be attending a pre-departure training before leaving for their volunteer assignment and will be invited to share their experiences with staff and their personal networks through public engagement activities when they return.
