Configuring Outlook Express and Netscape Messenger(E-mail)

When you open up Outlook Express for the first time, you will be required to configure it in order to access your E-mail.
- Open Outlook Express, you will see a link under E-mail called Setup a mail account. Click on this link.
- The Internet Connection Wizard screen will appear. In the field Display Name, type in your full name (i.e. Jdupont). Click the Next button.
- Select I already have an E-mail address that I'd like to use. In the field. In the field E-mail address, type in your E-mail address (i.e.jdupo001@uottawa.ca) Click the Next button.
- In the field My incoming mail server is a______server, select IMAP by clicking on the arrow in the drop down box.
- In the field Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server, type in this information, mailbox.uottawa.ca
- In the field Outgoing mail (SMTP) server type in this information, smtp-out.uottawa.ca Click the Next button ( This instruction is for computers located on-campus only. More and more Internet service providers are refusing access using our SMTP protocol. Contact your service provider for their SMTP configuration information. ).
- In the field Account name, type in your user ID (i.e.jdupo001) In the field Password, do not type in your password. Unselect Remember password. Click the Next button, and click Finish.
Netscape Messenger
When you open up Netscape Communicator for the first time, it will guide you through a setup process and create a profile for you in order to setup your email. Read and follow the instructions carefully:
- From the Creating a New Profile windows, click on the Next button.
- In the field Full Name, type your full name (i.e.Jean Dupont).
- In the field E-Mail Address, type your E-mail address (i.e. jdupo001@uottawa.ca) and then click on the Next button.
- In the field Profile Name, give a name to the profile and click on Next.
- Type smtp-out.uottawa.ca in the field Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server and then click on Next ( This instruction is for computers located on-campus only. More and more Internet service providers are refusing access using our SMTP protocol. Contact your service provider for their SMTP configuration information. ).
- Type in your User Name in the field Mail server user name.
- In the field Incoming mail server, type mailbox.uottawa.ca.
- Select Imap as Mail server type and then click on Next.
- In the field News (NNTP) server, type news.uottawa.ca, and then click on Finish.
If Netscape Communicator version 4.5 and above has already been installed, you will need to manually configure it.
- Open up Netscape Communicator
- From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
- Click on the + sign beside Mail & Newsgroups or double click on Mail & Newsgroups to expand it.
- Click on Identity, and type in your name and your E-mail address in the appropriate fields.
- Click on Mail Servers.
- In the box Incoming Mail Servers you should have by default mailbox.uottawa.ca (Default). If you have something different in that box, select it and click on the Delete button. After that click on the Add button.
- In the Server Name field, type mailbox.uottawa.ca.
- Select IMAP Server from the Server Type field.
- In the User Name field type your user name (i.e. jdupo001 only the first part of your e-mail address is required) and then click on OK.
- In the field Outgoing mail (SMTP) server, type smtp-out.uottawa.ca. ( This instruction is for computers located on-campus only. More and more Internet service providers are refusing access using our SMTP protocol. Contact your service provider for their SMTP configuration information. )
- In the field Outgoing mail server user name, enter your user name (i.e. jdupo001), and then click on OK
Configuration Information for Non-supported E-mail Clients
- Incoming server name: mailbox.uottawa.ca
- Out-going mail server name: the one supplied by your Internet Service Provider (i.e. Rogers, Sympatico, etc.)
