Behnoosh Hariri receives a MITACS Postdoctoral Fellowship
29 Apr 2011
Dr. Hariri has won a $55,000 MITACS’s Elevate Strategic Fellowship for her postdoctoral research in Video-Based Driver Drowsiness Monitoring. Driver drowsiness is the cause of 22 to 24 percent of car crashes, and results in a four- to six-times higher crash risk compared to driving while alert. The aim of Dr. Hariri’s research is to reduce the number of accidents due to driver fatigue and increase transportation safety by using video-based body and face gesture monitoring as signs of driver fatigue, including yawning, eye tiredness and eye movement, which indicate that the driver is no longer in a proper driving condition.
