The Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI) is a nonprofit group of eco-conscious consumers, businesses and conservation organizations. The goal is to promote green computing practices and specifically the development, deployment and adoption of smart technologies that can both improve the efficiency of a computer’s power delivery and reduce the energy consumed when the computer is in an inactive state.

Due to the University of Michigan’s size, research expertise, complexity and academic strength, along with the depth and breadth of its scholarly resources it was selected as a founding member of CSCI in 2007. University of Michigan has a reputation for award-winning environmental initiatives.

Green computing is a wide-open environmental frontier and it’s a natural for the University to apply its multi-disciplinary skills to address the growing environmental concerns around Information Technology (IT). Currently, the University of Michigan estimates its annual CO² emissions from computing is equivalent to the emissions from burning 3.4 million gallons of gasoline. The mission of the Climate Savers Computing Initiative @ the University of Michigan (CSCI @ U-M) goes beyond the national CSCI foundation’s goals to improve computing efficiency and to implement power management tools.

CSCI @ U-M also addresses IT environmental issues such as individual computing practices and data/server impacts, with the goal to influence other universities and the IT industry. Our goal is to make green computing practices the norm on campus so the great work accomplished by the project will carry on well beyond the scheduled completion date, January 2010.

Collaboration is key to the success of CSCI @ U-M. It’s essential to leverage the resources available. CSCI @ U-M has volunteers from over 20 units, including:
