Really Great Events

Published by Cabinet du recteur | Office of the President on Tuesday, September 29th, 2009 – 11:00 AM -

Last week we hosted two events that played to our strengths. The first was a terrific panel discussion on the H1N1 virus. We featured five prominent public health experts from our own campus explaining the risks, evaluating Canada’s preparedness and recommending best practices. All of our panelists are world class. It was a fabulous, value-added session and it got a lot of positive media coverage for uOttawa.

The second event was a visit by the Foreign Minister of Spain. He gave a most interesting presentation about Spain, the EU and the Americas, then answered questions on everything from counter-terrorism to Afghanistan. Just the kind of first-class event with an international flavour you’d expect on a campus in the heart of a G8 capital city.

The H1N1 panel discussion was a great opportunity for the community to get some info about the current flu season, but it seemed to me that very little was done on the side of proactively addressing large-scale concerns in the city and in Canada as a whole.

A marked concern came from several of the speakers about how well informed our national institutions are as to the preparations of the various regions within our borders, be it provincial distribution of Tamiflu, or local hospitals in their emergency wards.

What are we doing, as Canada's University, to not only find these problems, but make a difference?

It's my first year here at OttawaU, and to be honest I'm quite impressed by the level of effort the administration has been displaying in order to inform people; and do their best to ensure everyone is adequately prepared. Which is good considering the amount of students, teachers and other staff interacting with each other on a daily basis!

I'm a 3rd yr. polisci student. I was unable to attend the panel discussion but I also feel as thought the administration is doing a great job preparing for the H1N1. I've noticed the hand sanitizer around– what a great idea. Think of how many students touch those elevator buttons every day at morriset! There also seems to be a lot of information (posters, hand outs etc.) Thanks!
