Outstanding students enrolled in the M.Sc. program may be allowed to transfer
to the Ph.D. program without being required to write a master's thesis provided
they meet the following conditions:
- Completion of at least two three-credit courses at
the 5000 level or above in mathematics and statistics (MAT) with
a grade of A- or better in each; at least one of these courses
must be a core course that counts toward the basic comprehensive exam;
- Written recommendation by the supervisor and the
student's supervisor committee;
- Approval by the
.
The transfer must take place within 16 months of initial registration in
the master's. Following the transfer, all of the requirements of the
doctoral program must be met: 6 three-credit courses at the 5000 level or above
in mathematics and statistics (MAT) (M.Sc.+Ph.D.); the comprehensive
examination must be completed within 12 months of the transfer; participation
in the departmental seminar series, and a thesis.

The Epidemiology and Community Medicine graduate program of the
Department of Epidemiology and Community Medicine at the University of
Ottawa, in collaboration with the Ottawa-Carleton Institute in Mathematics
and Statistics, offers also a M.Sc. in biostatistics: option with thesis
(Specialization in epidemiology). The requirements for this M.Sc. are
identical to those for the M.Sc. in biostatistics: Option with Thesis
(Specialization in mathematics and statistics), except that the courses
required are MAT5992, EPI5240, EPI5241, EPI5330, EPI6178, EPI6278,
MAT5375 or MAT5190, and MAT5317 or MAT5191.
