Chargé d’Affaires Steve Kraft joined Defense Minister Schiltz, Luxembourg city Mayor Helminger and representatives from the British, Belgian, French and German embassies for a ceremony at the Golden Lady on the Place de la Constitution in Luxembourg city, marking Victory in Europe Day, May 8, 2009. In recognition of World Press Freedom Day 2009, U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Officer Jeff Lodermeier and Media Assistant Patricia Reckel co-hosted an array of journalists and media representatives from Luxembourg for an afternoon luncheon. The guests represented television, radio and print media outlets which publish and broadcast in five major languages, Luxembourgish, French, German, Portuguese and English. Lodermeier used the gathering as an opportunity to promote the Fulbright scholarship program which is available to Europeans and others for study in the United States. The commune of Bettendorf Firefighters Band performed a benefit concert, “Bettendorf Greets America” under the haut patronage of the U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg on Saturday April 4, 2009. The creative and lively program included American Blues, Jazz, Pop, and Broadway selections among other favorites. The stage was adorned with a grand New York City skyline, complete with a massive three dimensional replica of the Statue of Liberty. In addition to superb musical performances, the program included insightful narratives which set the scene for each song, as well as thespians who recreated a country-western hoe –down and a dramatic jazz funeral. The band played to a full house which included special guests such as the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Mr. Lucien Weiler, Bettendorf mayor Mr. Albert Back and Mr. Jeff Lodermeier, Public Affairs Officer from the U.S. Embassy. Sixty-five years after American and Allied troops liberated Luxembourg from Nazi oppression in World War II, U.S. Senator from Arizona and former Republican Presidential candidate, John McCain, together with U.S. Ambassador Ann L. Wagner, remembered fallen American soldiers at the American Military Cemetery and Memorial in Hamm. After the cemetery visit, Senator McCain toured Luxembourg city. Senator McCain was on a working visit to Luxembourg on 20 March, 2009 to discuss the TGen biomedical research project launched in June 2008 with the Ministries of Economy, Research and Health. On March 28-29 2009, the Luxembourg Cancer Society staged its annual Relay for Life in support of cancer patients and their friends and families. During the event, the U.S. Embassy fielded a Master team and took turns walking or running laps over the full 24- hour program at Luxembourg City’s largest sports center, the "Coque". Ambassador Wagner participated in the opening ceremony as well as the VIP laps alongside of several Ministers of the Government of Luxembourg, members of the national Parliament, members of the diplomatic corps, and many other officials. The Relay for Life 2008 edition was a huge success: 307 teams totaling over 7,000 participants walked or ran in relays over the weekend and more than 3,000 people attended the opening ceremony on Saturday evening. Dean Acheson Stage program at Court of JusticeAmerican law school graduates Mr. Sam Sadden and Ms. Antonia Eliason recently completed a three month internship at the Court of Justice of the European Communities located in Luxembourg. The two were selected from a competitive pool of applicants who were nominated by prominent American law schools and selected to work in the chambers of EU judges. Each year the U.S. Embassy administers the application process for approximately four interns work at the court as part of the prestigious Dean Acheson Stage (Intern) Program. On 24 March, 2009, Ambassador Wagner and chairman of FEDIL (Luxembourg Business Federation), Mr. Robert Dennewald hosted a reception honoring FEDIL and the Luxembourg and American business partnership. Companies invited were mainly FEDIL members of American origin and those doing business and trade with the United States of America. Also included were Luxembourg government officials collaborating on various business projects with FEDIL members, in particular the Health Technologies initiative being led by three ministries (Economy, Health, and Research) and counseled by PricewaterhouseCoopers Luxembourg. Within the context of this celebration, the U.S. Government/ U.S. Embassy Luxembourg inaugurated the “Spirit of Enterprise” Award to honor a U.S.-origin company which has played a major role in furthering the U.S.-Luxembourg business and trade partnership. The first recipient was PricewaterhouseCoopers Luxembourg, in recognition of twenty years of helping to bring U.S. companies to Luxembourg and thereby contributing to the growth and diversification of the Luxembourg economy. On 26 March, 2009, Ambassador WAGNER and the American Women's Club of Luxembourg hosted a reception thanking company sponsors, donors, and American Stand Committee Members for the great success of the 48th International Charity Bazaar in December 2008. December's International Bazaar had representation from dozens of different nationalities and attendance of upwards to 30,000 visitors. The American Stand was able to raise €38,000. Beneficiaries of the money raised include 112 charities from all over the world. On Wednesday, March 18th, 2009, U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg hosted a “Tech Forum” in presence of Minister for Communications, Jean-Louis Schiltz, representatives of LuxConnect and FEDIL (Business Federation of Luxembourg) as well as twelve U.S. IT/e-Commerce firms operating in Luxembourg: Amazon, Apple iTunes, Cisco Systems, Dell Luxembourg, EMC2, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle Luxembourg, PayPal / e-Bay, Sun Microsystems, Verizon Business. Minister Schiltz gave a presentation of new developments in ICT infrastructure investments by the Government of Luxembourg, in particular the expansion of the LuxConnect initiative as well as the ministry’s new promotional film and website “LuxembourgforICT”. To celebrate the Inauguration of President Barack Obama, the U.S. embassy invited students from 19 high schools in Luxembourg to participate in a special awards ceremony to coincide with the Inauguration ceremonies in Washington, DC. 195 students who a participated in the embassy essay contest, “Dear American President-Elect” were invited to the Embassy on January 20. Twenty five students were awarded prizes, which were partially sponsored by three local businesses, Libo bookstore, Utopia theaters and Sotour travel agency. Following the ceremony which was hosted by Ambassador Ann Wagner, the students attention was turned to a live television broadcast of the Inauguration of 44th President of the United States of America. On January 27, 2009, U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg Ann L. Wagner hosted a reception honoring the Luxembourg Athletes participating in the Winter Special Olympics in Boise, Idaho-USA, February 7 – February 13, 2009. Athletes participating in the Special Olympic Games are people with intellectual disabilities. The games are held every two years, rotating between Summer and Winter Games. The movement celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2008. At this year’s Winter Special Olympics, athletes will compete in 7 Winter sports. The Luxembourg team, made of 12 athletes and 6 coaches will compete in alpine and cross country skiing as well as snowshoeing. On January 8, 2009, the Warehouse Services Agency (WSA) in Sanem, Luxembourg celebrated its 30th Anniversary with a special event attended by U.S. Ambassador, Ann Wagner, Defense Minister Jean-Louis Schiltz, U.S. Air Force General Dave Howe, Colonel Alain Duchêne from the Luxembourg Army and numerous guests from the commune of Sanem, the WSA, the Government, the Parliament and Army of Luxembourg, the U.S. Air Force and numerous media outlets. In her speech, Ambassador Wagner praised WSA as symbolic of the friendship between Luxembourg and the U.S. and a concrete example of long-standing cooperation as allies in NATO. “The importance of Sanem as a logistics hub has been recognized for many years by the U.S. Air Force and the Department of Defense, and the superb reputation of WSA and its highly skilled workers is widely appreciated,” the Ambassador said. The facility operated by WSA is of vital importance to the global operations of the U.S. Air Force (USAF). It is one of the world’s premier logistics facilities for the storage and maintenance of war readiness materiel (WRM) to support U.S. and NATO operations in war and in peace. Materials stored and maintained at WSA include approximately 600 vehicles and thousands of individual components to support aircraft operations. Specialized materiel and equipment stored at WSA can be moved rapidly to create individual airbases almost anywhere in the world, with housing, kitchens, and all other facilities to support over 7,500 personnel. During the week of December 15, 2008 numerous commemorative societies and municipalities in Luxembourg organized ceremonies to commemorate the 64th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge, the bloodiest battle for American troops in World War II. Ambassador Wagner escorted by Sgt. Vargas, Sgt. Lacour and Sgt. Merlo of the Embassy’s Marines Security Detachment attended four events which were held at the American Military Cemetery and Memorial in Hamm, and in the Bulge region at Schumann’s Eck and the cities of Clervaux and Koetschette. The American Military Cemetery and Memorial was the site of a ceremony held by the Cercle des Officiers de la Garde Grand Ducale (Circle of the Commissioned Officers of the Grand Ducal Guards) to honor American and Luxembourg WWII dead. Ambassador Wagner joined Lt. Colonel Leandre Mignon from the Grand Ducal Guard at the memorial chapel where she gave remarks before laying a commemorative wreath. Musicians from the Luxembourg Army provided an honor guard and played “last post” and echo “taps”.
On December 16th, the day when the Battle of the Bulge started in 1944, the Ambassador attended events set up by the National Liberation Memorial at the location called Schumann’s Eck and at the famous G.I. monument in the city of Clervaux organized by the Circle of the Studies of the Battle of the Bulge in Clervaux. The Mayors and members of both municipalities as well as the local population gathered to pay tribute to the American liberators.  |
On December 20th, the organization named “Friends of Patton’s 26th Infantry Division” held their fourth annual Night Vigil in the town of Koetschette. The event was co-sponsored by 30 communes of the Ardennes region. General Gaston Reinig, chief commander of the Luxembourg army, Colonel Cromwell of the Defense Attaché’s office in Brussels, members of the Luxembourg Parliament and approximately 200 people from the neighboring towns and villages also attended the event. After the Ambassador’s speech, a children read poems and laid red roses at the memorial especially set up on this occasion. More Special Events ...
WWII LUXEMBOURGISH COMIC BOOK AND DVD DISTRIBUTED TO PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
On December 4th, 2008, joined by the minister of education and the author of the Luxembourg-language comic book and DVD, Mr. marcel Scheidweiler, Ambassador Ann Wagner re-launched the distribution of a valuable local-language cartoon about World War II and the American role in liberating Luxembourg. Fifth and sixth grade students from Belair Elementary school viewed a multimedia presentation in Luxembourgish and then each received a copy of the book, which tells the story in simple language and pictures. The production of the comic book and DVD was a joint effort between the embassy and the National Museum of Military History,who worked together to distribute the materials to all primary schools in thecountry. The project addresses the embassy’s goal of reaching younger audiences while sustaining the memory of our shared history during World War II. More Community Outreach events ...
At least 1,500 students visited the U.S. Embassy - Education USA stand at the 2008 22nd annual Student Fair held at LuxExpo. The U.S. Embassy represented Education USA and Fulbright scholars program. The fair runs over two days each fall and this year over 1,500 students received information about pursuing higher education in the U.S. Students gained information about the education system in America by speaking to embassy staff and student representatives. This annual event which is hosted by the Ministry of Education and Cedies, draws local high school students as well as high school and university students from neighboring France, Germany and Belgium. Students received handouts and highlighters with the Education USA logo as well as e-journals and books about preparing to study in America. Americans and friends from Luxembourg and beyond braved the cool, damp fall weather of November 11, 2008 to join U.S. Ambassador Ann Wagner in honoring U.S. veterans. The ceremony at the Luxembourg American Cemetery in Hamm, resting place of 5,076 World War II heroes, including General George S. Patton, featured remarks by Ambassador Wagner. The Ambassador highlighted the end of the First World War and the ultimate sacrifices made by women and men in the service of their country and in the name of freedom for Europe and the world. Notable at this year's ceremony was the turnout by the USAF 52nd Fighter Wing, led by Col. Wight from Spangdahlem Air Force Base in Germany, which provided the honor guard, piper, a capella singer for the U.S. and Luxembourg national anthems and nearly 50 airmen.

To encourage educational programs and outreach to young children and in the interest of the preservation of the collective memory of WWII 1939-1945, the embassy also welcomed dozens of 6th graders from the elementary school in Belair – Luxembourg City. Like in past years, the audience was completed by boy scouts, one of whom read the President’s Veterans Day Proclamation, representatives from U.S. Veterans Friends organization and other Luxembourg commemorative societies supporting U.S. veterans. Luxembourg students meet Colin Powell at World Scholar Athlete Games For the second time since 2006, the U.S. Embassy sponsored two high school students to attend the World Scholar Athlete Games in Kingston, Rhode Island. This year’s representatives from Luxembourg were Sophie Schiltz and Ben Reckinger from the Lycée de Garçons in Limpertsberg. Both students agreed that the program was an extraordinary experience which gave them the opportunity to witness American culture and way of life firsthand. According to Sophie Schiltz, the highlight was the keynote address by and the reception with former Secretary Colin Powell. "This was an experience I will never forget for the rest of my life" she said.
The World Scholar Athlete Games is a one-week educational exchange program aimed at young people aged 15-19 who meet to pursue their athletic or artistic interests. This year's program also featured music concerts and celebrity visits as well as discussion forums on world events such as environment and climate change, technology and leadership in a globalized world, world peace, as well as ethics in journalism or race in the United States. The keynote speaker was former State Secretary, General Colin Powell.
