MONROVIA, Liberia - Sergeant 1st Class Shawnte Reynolds mentors Liberian soldiers in Monrovia, Liberia in April 2009. Reynolds, an administration non-commissioned officer from U.S. Africa Command, is the first female soldier to take part in the security sector reform program, a U.S. State Department-led effort to help build leadership capacity within Liberia's military. During her four-month tour in Liberia, she hopes to gain understanding from male service members in the Armed Forces of Liberia of her role as a senior noncommissioned officer and to encourage them to respect women serving among their own ranks. NAIROBI, Kenya - Ambassador Mary Carlin Yates, U.S. Africa Command's deputy to the commander for civil-military activities, is met at the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) in Nairobi May 3, 2009 for a briefing and a tour of the facility. The IPSTC conducts training and education of military, civilian, and police personnel to promote stability and security in the East African region.
