The Wireless network will be accessible from more conveniently located areas across campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
For the sake of discussion the term SSID will appear in conjunction with the wireless network offering. An SSID is also referred to as a network name because essentially it is a name that identifies a wireless network.
Expanded Access to the campus is currently underway
With supported network interface card or integrated wireless and NIC driver software installed in your laptop, the University of Ottawa’s WPA configuration, and an InfoWeb account you can connect to the Internet.
For clients using supported network interface card and driver software installed in your laptop computers running Windows XP or Vista, Mac Leopard or Tiger, they are stongly recommended to use the WPA SSID (Service set identifier) identified as uOttawa-WPA.
For these users, the uOttawa-WPA SSID will provide a greater level of security by providing higher levels of encryption of their data.
To Access the Wireless Network:
- You must be either a registered student or an employee of the University of Ottawa.
- Access to Wireless for Guests will require accounts sponsored by Faculties, Departments and Services.
- you need an InfoWeb account
- you need a laptop or notebook computer that has a WiFi/802.11a/b/g compliant Network Interface Card with the appropriate drivers installed
An alternative to the VPN client is using WPA/WPA2 which provides advanced encryption methods and improved security for your data. MAC systems with OS 10.5 and above and system running Windows XP with Service Pack II and a patch or Windows Vista should also be able to benefit from WPA encryption.
Windows Operating systems before Windows XP and Windows Vista do not typically support WPA2. Systems such as Windows 2000 and Windows 98 do not have the features included in Service Pack II and as such are not WPA2 enabled.
If your system is WPA2 (click here for one-time WPA configuration instructions) which is backwards compatible with WPA you will be able to use the University of Ottawa SSID marked as uOttawa-WPA. If your system is not WPA/WPA2 enabled you will need to use the University of Ottawa’s VPN client.
To browse external Web sites, you do not need to install the VPN client if your system meets the minimum Operating System OS requirements.
