Cyber-Start Series: Introduction to Computing Services for Students

Introduction

Students at the University of Ottawa enjoy a variety of resources to support them in their academic endeavours. Check with your department and faculty to see what computing resources they have available. Additionally, Computing and Communications Services (CCS) operates a range of central facilities and services.

InfoWeb is the University’s central gateway to many secured services.

Accessing the Internet

You can access the Internet from the public student lab, department or faculty labs, at wireless areas on campus or from your home.

Accounts

Types of accounts available: www.ccs.uottawa.ca/accounts/list.html

For new students, computing accounts (mailbox, aix2 or aix1, PIN Server and Montpetit Lab accounts) are created in advance. There is no need to stay in line to get your account created. Find out what accounts have been created for you:

  • go to InfoWeb
  • choose Services, Computer and E-mail accounts

Other accounts must be requested in person at the Computing Lab, at InfoService or by calling the Computing Help Centre(CHC).
