Configuring WPA/WPA2 for WindowsXP

The University has two wireless networks: uOttawa and uOttawa-WPA. You should only associate with these networks. Networks with other names (EG, FreeInternet, OttawaU, etc) are rogue networks which are not part of the University. They may be there as an attempt to steal your password or other confidential information. Note that the University’s networks, both the VPN and WPA, use secure encryption to prevent others from viewing your traffic.

Important Note

This procedure makes use of Windows Zero Configuration and will subsequently disable all pre-installed wireless management utilities. You may need to reconfigure your system to accommodate these additional wireless networks (e.g. home wireless network).

Requirements

In order to connect to the University’s wireless network uOttawa-WPA with Windows XP, your system must have:

Service Pack 2 installed
A fully functioning and enabled WPA\WPA2 compatible network card.
Microsoft’s KB893357 patch installed (WPA2)
Up-to-date AntiVirus

Initial Configuration

Under the Start Menu, choose Control Panel then double click on Network Connections. The Network Connections window will appear.

Right click on the Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties. The Wireless Network Connection Properties window will open.
Select the Wireless Networks Tab.
Place a checkmark beside Use Windows to Configure my Wireless Network Settings.
In the Preferred Networks section, it is recommended to remove any networks listed with a red X. This could interfere with correct configuration.
Click the Add button.

In the Wireless Network Properties window, select the Association Tab and enter the following:
1. SSID = uOttawa-WPA (this is case sensitive)
2. Network Authentication = WPA2 (or WPA)
3. Data Encryption = AES (if WPA this = TKIP)

Select the Authentication Tab and select the following:

EAP Type = Protected EAP (PEAP)
Click the Properties button

Place a checkmark beside Validate Server Certificate.
Place a checkmark beside Connect To These Servers:.
In the box beneath it, type: Mobile.uottawa.ca.
In the Trusted Root Certification Authorities: list, scroll down and place a checkmark beside Thawte Premium Server CA.
In the Select Authentication Method, chose Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).
Click the Configure button.

Uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon

Click OK 3 times to Close.

Getting Connected

If you see the pop-up in Step 4, go to step 4. If no pop-up or need to select the right Wireless Connection go to step 1:

Right click the Wireless Network Connection icon in the Windows System Tray and choose View Available Wireless Connections.

If uOttawa-WPA is either Manual or Automatic, double click on it. If the status is Connected, then you are already connected.
The status will change to Validating identity.
The following pop-up will appear in the System Tray:

Double click the Wireless Network Connection icon.
Close the Wireless Network Connection Status window and enter your User name and Password in the Enter Credentials window. Do not put anything for the Logon domain.

**Authentication to the wireless network is accomplished using your InfoWeb account information. Please note when entering youre password, ALL letters MUST be entered in UPPERCASE.
