Input encouraged: SFUO Electoral Reform

The Elections Committee of the Student Federation is reviewing a proposal to change the voting system used to elect members of the executive.

Top 3For a quick review: we currently use a plurality voting system (also known as first-past-the-post). That means students vote once for each position on the executive. The candidate with the most votes is declared elected.

The proposed change would be a transferrable vote system.  That means students would instead rank their choices of candidates for each position on the executive.  The candidate with the majority of votes (50% + 1) would be declared elected.

We encourage you to review the proposed legislation here to see how this proposed change would change the voting process and the counting of ballots to ensure any elected candidate has a majority of voter support.

How to give your input:
We will be holding a roundtable discussion for students to stop in and give their input on December 5 from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM in the SFUO Boardroom.

If you cannot make the discussion, please forward your thoughts to boa.kennery@sfuo.ca before that date.

Student Centre

The SFUO is in the process of creating a plan for a Student Centre to be built on this campus and would like to have as much feedback from you. What would you like to see in your future Student Centre? A garden on the roof? More student Top Buttonlounges? A games room? Once we have a better idea of your ideal student centre, we can think of an estimated cost.

Send us your suggestions at centre@sfuo.ca.

Letters from Dean Haldenby, SFUO President

Letter to Allan Rock, President

Re: Flagrant Mistreatment of Students and Disregard of SFUO Nomination Rights
Dear Mr. Rock:

The Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO), the collective voice for all
University of Ottawa undergraduate students, is writing to inform the University of
Ottawa (UO) of two cases denoting serious injustices against students. The SFUO
demands that you intervene immediately to remedy these troubling situations.
The SFUO stands strongly behind all of its students and their appeals, in particular the
most recent deliberate abuses shown in the Wang and Kelly cases. Further, the SFUO
condemns the actions taken by the UO to undermine SFUO nomination rights.
