What does one need to be able to teach a language and to teach in that language? How is a language used, how is it influenced by the user’s culture, what steps can make it easier to learn and how should one go about teaching it? These questions and more are dealt with from a theoretical and a practical standpoint. We also look at language education from a multidisciplinary perspective: language, literature, linguistics, psychology and education.

The knowledge you will acquire in our program is much in demand. An increase in the number of newcomers, the popularity of immersion programs and the need in today’s world to know more than one language have created a lot more opportunities for language teachers and second language education specialists.

The Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Education co-sponsor our program. If you are interested in second language teaching and meet the conditional admission requirements of the Faculty of Education, a place will be reserved for you in the bachelor of education program. If you are not from Ontario, you can opt to return to your home province in order to obtain a certificate enabling you to teach there.

You can easily combine our programs with a concentration or an honours in another field.
