Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
The department is a large teaching and research unit within the Faculty of Science. As a teaching unit, it offers a complete selection of programs leading to the B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. in mathematics and statistics. There are also two joint honours bachelor degrees, in Mathematics - Economics and in Mathematics - Computer Science. A cooperative (work-study) program is available for students in honours programs.
The research done in the department covers many areas of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics and probability. The department is affiliated with two of the most prestigious mathematics research institutes in Canada: the Centre de Recherches Mathématiques of the University of Montreal and the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences in Toronto.
For any questions about our programs, courses, professors, scholarships, and student services, as well as job opportunities and the research going on in the department, please browse the menu on the left. Feel free to contact us -- look under .
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is now considering applications for the new joint collaborative program in Bioinformatics at the Master's level beginning next September. The program is a joint venture between the Ottawa-Carleton Institute of Biology, the Ottawa-Carleton Institute in Computer Science, the Ottawa-Carleton Institute of Mathematics and Statistics, the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the University of Ottawa, and the Department of Biochemistry, Immunology and Microbiology at the University of Ottawa.

OTTAWA, June 26, 2007: On June 1, 2007, the University of Ottawa became one of only three Canadian universities, and the only university in eastern Canada, to have its undergraduate courses in statistics officially accredited by the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) under the new Associate Statistician professional designation.
The SSC offers two levels of accreditation, the Professional Statistician (P.Stat.) and the Associate Statistician (A.Stat.). These qualifications demonstrate that the accredited parties have achieved a certain level of professional competence in the understanding and application of statistical methods and maintain a level of ethical practice.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Ottawa offers programs in mathematics and in statistics in both official languages. Under the new SSC accreditation, students who graduate from the Specialization in Statistics program (combined with a minor from another department) will have automatically satisfied the educational requirements for the A.Stat. professional designation.
