Have you seen the changes in the South American blueberry market?
I am sure you have noticed that it is becoming more and more interesting.
Why?
Well… because is growing and is getting more mature, people are asking for the blues to their retailers and grocery stores.
Anyway, we talked about it during the Fruit Attraction in Sao Paulo with some growers and a couple of resellers.
I took as an example how Peru is selling more and more fruit to their neighbors.
And because we were in Brazil, drinking caipirinhas, I thought that it was only fair to talk about our host.
WAIT… if you are not into data you can skip this part and go toward the end, if you get to the PSs you went too far.
So Brazil’s blueberry imports from Peru grew more than 87% from 2021 to 2022 and more than 106% from 2022 to 2023. and they were importing fruit from Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay.
Bear in mind that they have 49% of South America’s population, they are also growing their own blues, and they are around 50% of the Peruvian imports to South America.
In short, they like their BLUEBERRIES.
Imagine if they start consuming as much blues as the Chilean or Uruguayan neighbors…
If that happens all the blueberry-producing countries in the region would have their own “almost-local” humongous market.
Anyway, after more drinks, the conversation took a turn into football, and because I am Argentinean they thought I had an opinion on the sport…
...and I don't.
Look… I have as much interest in football as the amount of sea beaches in Switzerland.
If you catch my drift

That happens a lot, so check the first comment.
PS1: Peru is a good reference because is the largest blueberry exporter in the world and their sales in South America grew 69,96% in 2022 and in 2023 117,76% and there is still more room to grow
PS2: Uruguay has 0,78% of the region’s population but is importing 3% of the Peruvian volume and also getting fruit from Argentina and Chile while producing their own blueberries. so the consumption per capita is much larger than the Brazilian one.
