Featuring the Senses Architect I’m Sanjotz Thuo, also known as The Senses Architect, an architect from Kenya dedicated to transforming how we design spaces through multisensory experience design (M.E.D.). My passion for sensory architecture is both personal and professional, shaped by my upbringing in Baringo County, where the natural, immersive sensory environment deeply influenced my understanding of how spaces affect well-being. As the first architect from my village, inspired by my father and grandfather—both masons—I’ve dedicated my career to designing spaces that engage all senses. My academic journey, from being the third-best student in Kenya's KCSE to studying architecture at the University of Nairobi, fueled my curiosity about how the built environment impacts mental health and neurodivergence. Among my recent achievements: -I’m collaborating with RareGem Talent School in Nairobi, a school for dyslexic learners, to create a proposal for play spaces that cater to the pupils’ sensory needs. -I actively volunteer with neurodiversity initiatives across Kenya, advocating for inclusive design in public and educational spaces. -I’ve developed a startup proposal to install affordable container sensory rooms in Kenyan schools, providing accessible, multisensory environments that support neurodivergent students' learning and well-being. -I publish a weekly newsletter, The Senses Architect, where every Friday I write about neuro-inclusion in Kenyan schools, sharing insights and strategies for creating more inclusive educational environments. My projects include a multisensory footbridge and tunnels proposal for Nairobi’s highways, turning pedestrian infrastructure into sensory-rich, inclusive spaces.

💡New publication💡 Beyond the Minimum: designing for neurodiversity in museums and galleries This study focused on the relationship between architectural excellence and designing for neurodiversity in museums and galleries. With almost half of neurodivergent people avoiding these spaces, this study is key for architects, designers and museums alike. LINK: https://lnkd.in/eAdAesfD Toar S., Elizabeth Cooper, PhD and I extend a massive thank you to everyone who participated and shared their experiences. We are proud to have this published in the International Journal of Architectural Research. This research couldn’t have been done without the ongoing collaboration from The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Rebecca McGinnis and Emily Harr) Science Museum Group (Fiona Slater ), The British Museum (Jessica Starns). Calling all #architecture practices. Want to attract #neurodivergent talent into your teams? Here are a few tips: 1. Make interviews accessible and inclusive by asking what the person's needs are ahead of the interview. 2. Create a culture that doesn't force a single form of social engagement and accepts people for who they are. 3. Provide reasonable adjustments.
