Increasing the number and diversity of women in leadership roles in PR and communications

About us

The PR & communications industry is female dominated (67%) overall. However, at senior levels it becomes male dominated with only a third of boardroom positions taken by women. Women in PR exists to address this imbalance. Our mission is to improve equality and diversity across the industry by increasing the number and diversity of women in leadership roles.

Hands up if you have ever experienced feelings of self doubt, an intense fear of failure, or feeling like a fraud? #ImposterSyndrome can creep up on anyone. 👀 Especially women. A KPMG research study found that 75% of female executives across industries have experienced imposter syndrome in their careers. And, 85% of women believe their imposter syndrome is driven by the need to meet the expectations set by societal and workplace norms. Last week, Women in PR committee member Katie Eborall joined a panel to discuss the topic and its hidden force that holds so many talented people back. ✋ Hosted by London Speech Workshop | B-Corp and Emma Serlin - with guest speakers Michelle Minnikin and Chris Singleton - the panel discussed experiences and struggles with imposter syndrome, and also offered tools to help people move through it. 💫Here are some standout tips from the panel to help shift self-doubt into self-belief. 👇Got more tips to contribute? Add them in the comments section to keep the conversation going. 📖 You can also read about what the panel discussed as well as more coping strategies in the link below: https://lnkd.in/eZ5FrCWU #impostersyndrome #womensupportingwomen #womeninPR #femaleseniorleaders #WiPR

Ageism in PR is rife in our comms industry, and it is rising rapidly. New research from Women in PR & Opinium shows a 20% surge in women experiencing ageism in PR & Comms over the last four years. Ageism is pushing senior women out of the industry prematurely. Instead of recognising the immense value of expertise, too many workplaces cling to outdated biases that sideline our MOST experienced talent. The stats from our recent survey speak volumes; take a look at our carousel 👇 It’s time for change. WiPR is leading the conversation and calling on employers to take action.   Join us in tackling ageism and celebrating senior female talent. Know a superstar for the 40 Over 40 WiPR Powerlist, or is it you? What an honour to be a WACL (Women in Advertising & Communications Leadership ) Talent Award winner. In partnership with NABS, the award recognises women in marketing, advertising and communications who go above and beyond, and are shaping the future of the creative industries. When you’ve held leadership positions for some time, yet have so much more you want to achieve, it’s not always easy to figure out how to continue learning, growing and making an impact beyond your day job. Not only does this award provide a bursary for training, the game changer is the connections and community of inspirational women you get to be part of. Thank you to Lianre Robinson for encouraging me to apply and Satin Reid and the Talent Award team for making it possible. #WACL #WACLTalentAward #Leadership

  • Huge congratulations to our committee member, Ishtar Schneider, who was recently recognised with the Highly Commended award at the Campaign 2025 Inspiring Women Awards for “Diverse, Inclusive Workplace”. On this occasion, Ishtar noted, ‘This recognition underscores the importance of the concerted efforts by many people to make our industry a more diverse, equitable and inclusive place to grow a fantastic career in PR and communications. I’m grateful to play a small part in lifting women to achieve leadership and career success, together with my incredibly inspiring Women in PR Committee, mentoring programme leads as well as the PRCA Equity Inclusion Advisory Board. I’m lucky to be learning from other inspiring women – and men – every day. I’m both humbled and hungry to keep going – let’s shape the future we want side by side” We’re so proud of your achievements, Ishtar! 🎉 #WomenSupportingWomen

  • The diagnosis gap between neurodivergent men and women may be closing but the continual delayed recognition of neurodiversity in women is not only a failure of awareness but also a complex interplay of gender biases. This week, we’re recognising #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek - a week which aims to transform how neurodiversity is perceived by providing the opportunity to recognise the many skills and talents of neurodivergent individuals. We want to hear from you in the comments - what do you value about neurodivergence?

  • Ramadan is an important time for many colleagues, it's a sacred time for prayer, fasting and deep reflection for many Muslims. By fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace, the PR industry can create an environment where everyone can thrive. Here’s how to be mindful and supportive to your Muslim colleagues this month, particularly if you're a line-manager or leader. 🌙✨ Supportive work environment, meetings, events: ⏳ Be mindful of energy levels, potentially schedule long meetings earlier in the day. ✅ Offer flexible working hours if possible. 🍽️ Be thoughtful about food in team spaces. Client work & time zones: ⏰ Some roles may require working outside local sunset hours. 🤝 A simple check-in can go a long way—acknowledge the challenge & offer support. Annual leave & celebrations: 🎉 Eid celebrations mark the end of Ramadan (Mar 30-31 2025), planning ahead helps everyone enjoy the occasion! 📅 Chat early about workloads to keep things balanced. The best support? Ask! 💬 A quick “How can I support you?” can make all the difference. Small actions make a big impact. By being considerate and supportive, everyone in our PR industry can feel valued and included during this sacred time for some. 💛 #Ramadan #WorkplaceFlexibility #InclusiveWorkplace #WiPR

Finally, a report that puts an exact number on the loss of brilliant women in PR. A shocking 3,910 female public relations practitioners in England and Wales left the industry mid-career or failed to advance to senior positions. The "Missing Women" study, with insights from our President Jo Carr and Committee member Ishtar Schneider, has reignited an important debate.  Hats off to Socially Mobile and Chartered Institute of Public Relations for publishing this critical research. We also thank Stephen Waddington and Sarah Waddington CBE CDir ChartPR for their contribution to this project. As a community that exists to help women to rise and thrive, WiPR understands the challenges and continues to advocate for greater diversity and numbers of women in leadership roles. The report underscores the urgency for action. Read the report here 👉 : 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e4qW9iMm Vote below to share your opinion. #WomeninPR #WiPR #Advocacy #Research #LeadershipGap

  • Our committee member Ella Darlington's recent opinion in The Times resonates deeply with us where she discusses the necessity of women-only spaces that prioritise real support and representation over status. At #WiPR , we strive to be that space. ✨ Read the insightful piece here 👉 : 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dE38WFnQ #WiPR #Empowerment #WomensSupport
