Whatley Manor’s Enhanced Ambition Enables Bolder Climate Action In an industry-leading move for two successive years, Whatley Manor announces the achievement of net-negative carbon status by maximising its carbon reduction on property and supporting a nature-based carbon sequestration project to remove more hard-to-abate carbon emissions than emitted for 2023. Whatley Manor has taken its climate action to the next level by entering into a three-year purchase agreement to invest in 8,250 high-quality carbon credits produced by the San Jerónimo Coatlán Carbon Sequestration Project in Mexico, which support Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 1, 3, 6, 8, 13, 15 and 17 for impactful social, economic and environmental benefits. The project works with Climate Action Reserve (CAR), a high-quality carbon credit registry that establishes rigorous standards involving multi-sector stakeholder workgroup development and local engagement, and issues carbon credits in a transparent and publicly available system. The Reserve carbon credits program demonstrates that high-quality carbon credits, known as Climate Reserve Tonnes (CRT), foster reductions in GHG pollution that are real, additional, verifiable, enforceable, and permanent. This November, Whatley Manor will retire 1250 high quality carbon credits to offset more than the 1057.2 tCO₂e (tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent) emitted in 2023. An additional 7,000 carbon credits will be retired in the following two years to offset more than the projected CO₂e from anticipated renovation work and guest travel to the hotel in 2024 and 2025. “At this most urgent of times, we believe that we are responsible for our total impact and helping other remote communities, as well as being accountable, transparent and compliant in our actions,” noted Christian Landolt, owner of Whatley Manor. “This bold step is one of Whatley Manor’s most robust contributions to our decarbonisation journey. After achieving 98% carbon reduction in Scopes 1 & 2, five years ahead of SBTi (Science Base Targets Initiative) targets, we are turning our attention to all that Scope 3 entails,” says Sue Williams MI FIH, sustainability advisor to Whatley Manor and founder of Positive Hospitality. The Good of the Hive: Celebrating Whatley's 21st Anniversary In celebration of Whatley’s 21st Anniversary, we were honoured to host artist Matt Willey, the visionary founder of The Good of the Hive project. This global art initiative aims to create awareness about the interconnectedness of all life on Earth through the medium of art. Matt has committed to hand-painting 50,000 honeybees in murals around the world, symbolizing the unity and intricate balance of all living things. Matt Willey's mission is not just about painting bees; it’s about using art as a catalyst to inspire thought and action regarding planetary health, sustainability, and harmony with nature. Each mural Matt creates is a vivid reminder of the essential role we all play in nurturing and protecting our planet, much like a hive depends on every bee to thrive. From August 6th to 30th, Matt painted 16 bees on a wall at Whatley, each symbolising the thriving natural ecosystems that his project promotes. The mural also features a variety of wildlife and plant species. During his time at Whatley, Matt engaged with the local community. On August 15th, children from Malmesbury Primary School visited and participated in the mural's creation, meeting the artist and learning about the importance of bees and nature. The Malmesbury Guides group also contributed by painting flowers on the mural, making it a true community effort. Whatley's beekeeper, John Stevens, spent time with Matt, visiting the hives and harvesting honey together, which was later enjoyed in the kitchen. On August 20th, Matt hosted one of our regular Community Gatherings, organized by our sustainability team, Sue Williams MI FIH and Rory Fox Evans CMgr MCMI. Members of local sustainability groups joined us to hear Matt share the inspiring story behind The Good of the Hive. He highlighted the various projects he’s worked on globally, including our very own mural at Whatley. Matt is now in Beijing working on his next project, we are incredibly proud to have a piece of The Good of the Hive here at Whatley. This mural is a lasting testament to the power of art to inspire and unite communities in the pursuit of a healthier planet.
