This week, I had the opportunity to visit Cumbria as part of our ongoing efforts to upskill our workforce and renew key competencies for our client, Skanska on their Clifton Hall Rail bridge replacement that currently spans the M6. The visit allowed us to focus on continuous professional development while gaining deeper insights into the specific demands of the project. Being on-site provides a hands-on learning environment, where our team can engage directly with any project specific requirements and see the environment they will be working in. Working alongside Skanska and fulfilling their requirements allows us to ensure the workforce have a clear understanding of the standards and expectations, whilst reinforcing our commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes. By collaborating, we are strengthening the partnership between our two companies, essential in ensuring that our workforce remains competent, confident, and aligned with client project specific needs, especially in dynamic, environments like this where both rail and motorway background noise will be an additional hazard. The trip to Cumbria was more than just about technical skills, it provides the project team and our workforce with face to face contact, the start of any successful relationship. Building Hibernacula with Work Experience Students 🦎🪵 Fiona Dowling joined the Environment and Ecology team, work experience students, operatives, and the supply chain on-site at SCS West to learn about and construct hibernacula. The day began with a presentation from the Environment and Ecology Team on the importance of building hibernacula at this time of year to provide safe winter shelters for hibernating animals. The students then put their knowledge into action, building multiple shelters in preparation for winter. The project consisted of: 🔹 Selecting a site and digging a hole 🔹 Laying a base of logs, stones and bricks 🔹 Creating hiding spaces with smaller logs, branches and leaves 🔹 Insulating with straw, dry leaves and soil 🔹 Lightly covering the site with soil A fantastic hands-on experience supporting local wildlife! 🌿 #VGCGroup #SCS #WomenInConstruction Molly Richardson, Fiona O., Salma C.
