Police are investigating the felling of one of London’s largest and most significant ancient trees in an Enfield park 🚨 The remains of the Whitewebbs Park oak were discovered by council workers last week. With a girth of over six metres, the oak is thought to be more than 400 years old 🌳 “It is very unusual to see the felling of an oak tree of this size and age. Legally protected status for trees like the Whitewebbs Oak is long overdue. This issue has widespread public support and is an open goal for the Government to act upon.” - Adam Cormack 💬 We've been campaigning for stronger legal protection of our oldest and most important trees for years. Our #LivingLegends petition was handed in to Downing Street with 100,000 signatures and the Heritage Trees Private Members Bill was introduced in the House of Lords by Baroness Young in 2023 📜 Read more at 👉 https://lnkd.in/eBsQMMTE Learn more about our oldest trees at https://bit.ly/3YsCJLa

The Government has promised a win-win for nature and building through the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, but this is not the case ⚠️ In its current form the Bill would weaken environmental protections, risk species extinction, and jeopardise the Government’s legal target to restore nature 🌱 We’re calling on MPs to get support amendments to ensure our planning system helps to restore wildlife and protect our most cherished natural spaces 🌳 Read more with Wildlife and Countryside Link 👉 https://lnkd.in/ehwJisSu #WilderByDesign

Natural environments such as woodlands are beneficial for human health and wellbeing 🌳 Spending time in woods engages the senses. These sensory experiences of biodiversity contribute to the positive effects of being in nature 💚 But the UK’s woodlands are not as biodiverse as they once were. The loss of species is likely eroding the variety of sensory experiences a woodland can give us 🐦 The BIO-WELL project explored the impact of biodiversity on wellbeing and people's responses to biodiversity 🔍 Head to our website to learn more about the research 👉 https://bit.ly/4i46B7u University of Kent Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology, University of Kent
