Better Future, Quicker

About us

We transmit, distribute and connect electricity to and from 3.5 million homes and businesses over our network, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. We operate in three of the UK's largest cities (Liverpool, Glasgow & Edinburgh) accounting for 1.6m (46%) of our customers, as well as three significant rural areas (North Wales, Scottish Borders and Dumfries & Galloway). We take electricity generated from power stations and renewable energy sources, reduce it to the low voltage needed for homes and transport it through our vast electricity network. We also provide customers with new or upgraded connections to our network. We are a substantial employer with a distribution workforce of 2,600 internal employees made up of field staff, engineers, technical specialists, customer service and support staff based at 17 locations in the South of Scotland and 17 locations in England and Wales. We utilise around 2,500 contractors across these areas. Our highly trained and specialist staff work 24/7 to maintain the performance and safe condition of our electricity network, respond to customer enquiries and restore the supply as quickly as possible when a fault occurs on the network. In the UK, we are a leading Distribution Network Operator (DNO) in distributing renewable energy, having connected around 7GW of renewable generation to our networks with more connected on a daily basis.

  • 💡We’re unlocking access to more data about our network with the release of our aggregated smart meter data, covering over 105,000 smart meters across 1,600 transformers in constrained substations. 🔌⚡Smart meters record electricity consumption every half hour. We aggregate the data to maximise its usefulness and are making this available on our 🌐Open Data Portal, whilst protecting individual privacy. But that’s not all - we’re now sharing smart meter penetration data, showing how widely smart meters are embedded across our network. We’re also sharing LV monitoring data for 1,600 transformers, enabling our stakeholders to understand constraints on our low-voltage network and supporting targeted development of new flexibility services. 🔎Combined, these datasets provide a clear picture of energy usage on our network and enhance visibility of our network. This improves how we manage our network and enables more accurate interruption notifications and quicker restoration of network faults - enabling us to address network constraints before they become a problem. 🤝Each of these datasets have been carefully prepared with methods that allow us to protect to the privacy of our customers, whilst maximising the usefulness of the data. 🔁 By sharing, and combining these datasets, we’re supporting developers, generators, market participants and innovators in making informed decisions based on real world insights, and contributing to a more efficient, flexible energy system which supports the transition to a decarbonised electricity system by 2035. 🌐Ready to explore? • You may have heard on the news - we're saying "so long" to Scotland’s oldest transmission line! 👋 Known as the ‘G-Route’, the electricity transmission line was built in 1929 to connect three coal-fired power stations in Renfrewshire; Dellingburn, Yoker and Braehead. The line was constructed following the 1926 Electricity Act, which kicked off the connection of over 120 coal-fired power stations around the country using overhead transmission lines. 🌍⚡ Now, in place of the aging steel towers, this section of the network is served by 182 wooden poles, providing a more resilient and reliable service to its customers and enabling greater electrification of the region. Nicknamed ‘Trident’ due to their design, these wooden poles have been used in place of the steel towers due to the nature of the circuit needed to support the lines’ customers. Read more on our website ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eS8W_6UG Richard Wylie, Lead Design Engineer at SP Energy Networks, said: “One hundred years ago, a group of ambitious engineers began work to connect up Britain’s electrical grid and bring electricity into homes and changing people’s lives forever. “These transformative towers helped open up access to electricity to those who had never had it before – modernising and evolving the home to be able to adopt revolutionary appliances that are now a regular part of everyday life. “A century on and we’re embarking on a multi-billion pound investment in our transmission network – the greatest rewiring of the network since it was built– to open up capacity on the grid to transport clean, homegrown electricity to power communities across Britain towards an all-electric future.” #SPEnergyNetworks #EnergySecurity #NetZero #CleanPower2030

  • We have donated eight laptops to Community Veterans Support (CVS) in Glasgow! 🎉 This will help to fast-track the centre’s tech upgrade plans, replacing its outdated IT systems and ensuring that disused technology is usefully repurposed♻️🌍 CVS has been a lifeline for veterans in the Glasgow area for over 12 years, giving them access to essential services and encouraging sense of community. Our donated laptops allow the veterans access to better tools to upskill and stay connected to their community, regardless of their location 🤝 David Devenney, former Royal Marine and Director of the centre said “This tech upgrade marks a significant leap forward for our centre. Now, our veterans will be able to access training and engage in hybrid working. This is particularly important for our hospitalised veterans and will ensure that they remain connected and continue to develop essential skills.” Visit our website to read more: https://lnkd.in/gmQg84Cc #LocalCommunity #SPEnergyNetworks #CommunityVeteransSupport

  • Flexibility services play a crucial role in balancing supply and demand as we transition to a smarter, Net Zero energy system. To support uptake in our flexibility services, we are providing visibility and access to data which enables you to plan, invest in and take part in our growing flexibility market. To support this, we are now publishing data on: • Assets which have been registered for flexibility services – find out what is being offered on our network • Historic flexibility competitions - letting you see what opportunities have been made available and where • Historic flexibility bids – letting you see what has been offered into previous competitions and what has been successful Flexibility services provide an opportunity for businesses, communities, and technology providers to adjust their energy use or generation to help balance the grid—reducing the need for expensive upgrades and supporting Net Zero ambitions. This data can help you make more informed decisions, explore opportunities, and get involved in providing services to help balance our network.
