We are delighted that Sir Robert McAlpine has been appointed as main contractor to deliver the North East Space Skills and Technology Centre (NESST) for Northumbria University 🚀 This appointment follows our Pre-Construction Services Agreement to deliver the £30m build contract, which comprises a full demolition, new build and extension of the pre-existing Wynne Jones building at the heart of the University’s Newcastle city campus. Mark Gardham, Sector Director at Sir Robert McAlpine, said: “We look forward to continuing our long-standing, successful relationship with Northumbria University and delivering this state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Newcastle." Huge kudos to Sir Robert McAlpine’s Quantity Surveyor, Tom Bray, and Assistant Estimator, Alex O’Shea, who have just embarked on an incredible challenge in support of Maggie's Centres! Tom and Alex are walking the 96-mile West Highland Way, one of Scotland’s most iconic long distance trails. They will be tackling nearly 15,000ft of elevation gain, roughly the equivalent of climbing Snowdon four times, and walking between nine and 19 miles each day. As if this wasn’t enough, they have also invited their supporters to set them a series a challenges along the way. Before setting up, they said: “Maggie’s has touched the lives of countless individuals and families, offering a lifeline during some of their most challenging moments. The project team working on the A19 Tees Viaduct refurbishment project won the Ethos Award for excellence in wellbeing, training and community engagement at the recent Bridges Awards 2025! 👏 The judges praised the team's "outstanding approach to staff wellbeing," the general health and safety on the project, their "activities to promote engineering and encourage retainment in the sector," and the levels of collaborative working and community engagement. Sir Robert McAlpine is thrilled to be working with Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures on delivering new mental health facilities at Tolworth Hospital for South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust. Yesterday, patients, carers, NHS staff and leaders from across the region came together to attend a special “Groundbreaking Ceremony” to mark the start of Tolworth Hospital’s £110m redevelopment, which is the final phase of the NHS Trust’s Better Environments Programme and follows up the transformation of the Springfield Hospital site in Tooting, SW London, both delivered by development partner STEP (a JV between Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures and Kajima). Tolworth Hospital’s redevelopment will deliver a new five-ward hospital building, providing state-of-the-art accommodation for a number of existing mental health wards, which will relocate from older buildings at Springfield Hospital. From late 2027 a total of seven acute, older persons and specialist wards will be based at Tolworth, alongside a range of outpatient services, rebalancing provision across the Trust’s two major inpatient sites. As part of the build, Tolworth will also be opened up, with new and improved landscaping, access routes, a central plaza and a café, helping to break mental health stigma and integrate the site into the community. Leigh Draper ChPP, Project Manager, Sir Robert McAlpine, said: “We are delighted to be working again with STEP and South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust on delivering Tolworth Hospital’s redevelopment. Take a look at the Road Worker Summit recently held in London to address the growing issue of abuse faced by roadworkers and led by Kevin Robinson, CEO of Safer Highways, and Vip Gandhi, Managing Director of Transport at Sir Robert McAlpine and Chair of the Safer Highways - Stamp It Out programme. The event was attended by Lilian Greenwood MP, Minister for the Future of Roads, who delivered a keynote speech outlining the Government’s support on the issue. In 2023, more than 2,300 incidents were officially reported, with many more going unrecorded due to a lack of confidence that action would be taken. Vip Gandhi said: “By working together with other organisations we can share ideas, knowledge and best practice, help curb instances of abuse and make our roads a safer, better place to work.” Thanks go to the other tier one contractors, supply chain partners, local authorities, the National Police Chiefs' Council, National Highways and other key highways stakeholders who joined the discussions.
