𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱 Passwords are the keys to your digital world; you can’t access anything without first entering a username and password. A good password is: • different from passwords used for other system • at least 12 characters long, with uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols • not written down 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱? If you speak to a techie, they will tell you that a great password is something like this: “%^bu|SoTg#Tg@AV@)7F$” A password strength tool such as bitwarden’s https://lnkd.in/eMcCUuW shows that it would take centuries to crack so it “must” be a great password. Whilst strong in the real world without a password manager this password is useless as you would need to write it down. A good password needs to take centuries to crack and memorable. 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗽𝗵𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗲 Instead of a single complex password use three separate random words. An example would be “DapperDifferRoute”. However, this is still not strong enough but if we add spaces: “Dapper Differ Route” we now have a password that would take centuries to crack and is memorable. It still doesn't meet our requirements though as we need a number. “Dapper Differ Route11”. Voila we have a password that is strong, memorable and meets IT requirements. 𝗖𝗮𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 It’s hard enough to come up with one word for a password and now we need three. This is where a passphrase generator come in handy. There are many and they generate random words for you, simply cycle them until you find one that you will remember. Bitwarden offer a password generator https://lnkd.in/eg3i96sd by default it will create a password rather than a passphrase but if you select passphrase, change the words to 3 and tick Capitalize and Include a number its easy. E.g. Perplexed1-Commodity-Pacify 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 Many systems still force you to change your password on a regular basis. Whilst in theory this is good practice, human's shortcut the process and instead of creating a new password we simply append a number (or a month) to the end and change that each time. Whilst this satisfies the need to change the password if someone else knows your password it isn’t difficult to guess what the next password in the sequence will be. 𝗣𝗮𝘀𝘀𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿 With a password manager you need to remember one password which you use to access the manager itself, all other passwords are stored within it. This allows you to use random passwords as you don’t need to remember them.
