Last month, we came together to explore some big, complex themes around AI, and ended up with one particularly mouth-watering question: How do we implement agentic AI in ways that unlock real value, without compromising control? What emerged was a shared sense of opportunity and urgency. Yes, the fundamentals of AI and tech transformation still apply…but the stakes are rising. To move fast without breaking everything, we need to balance governance and innovation, risk and speed. That’s where agentic frameworks come in. At Satalia and within WPP, we’re developing this around four core traits: persistence, intelligence, risk, and autonomy. It’s all helping triage potential use cases, assign appropriate levels of oversight, and build guardrails that enable both top-down control and bottom-up innovation. Some of the big themes that came up: 1) Agents vs tools Agents can act independently, learn, evolve, and initiate action. They’re not just another interface. 2) Governance and risk We need strong frameworks to manage risk while staying agile enough to innovate. 3) Use cases and prioritisation Agent opportunities start by mapping friction across the supply chain, then triaging ideas based on data readiness, business impact, and SME involvement. 4) Commercial impact We’re shifting from a people-and-time model to a people-and-tech model, and that comes with challenges — from junior training to KPI overkill. 5) Culture and adoption From excitement to concern, people are feeling everything from liberated to lucky to curious. One thing’s clear: organisational culture will make or break adoption. And while not every problem needs an agent to solve it, agents are becoming more capable, more quickly than many expected. They’re already reshaping how work gets done in leading labs and businesses. As one provocation put it: the more responsibility we give our agents, the more value they create — but the more critical it becomes that they don’t go wrong.
