Ex Wessex Leader is all about building leadership capability and confidence in our Troopers to Corporals—preparing them for the challenges ahead, whether that’s the AOSB, Junior Command Course, or simply stepping up within their unit. Supported by the Inspirational Group, and led by our very own B Sqn OC Jake Meyer BEM FRGS, the programme focuses on effective planning, decision-making, and practical leadership skills. At its core is an introduction to the Army’s Combat Estimate Process—equipping participants with the tools to think critically, plan efficiently, and make sound decisions under pressure. Throughout the exercise, soldiers learn to adapt to rapidly changing scenarios while demonstrating clear communication and confident leadership. By the end of Ex Wessex Leader, they have not only enhanced their tactical knowledge but also gained the resilience and mindset needed for future leadership roles. We explored #followership (our own, and the followership culture that we influence as leaders); curious and critical mindsets; effective communication; competition v collaboration, and even got a trip to the Restoration Centre at the The Tank Museum so that they could get a deeper insight into development of armoured warfare, and the historical relevance to today's challenges. It’s just another reason why being part of the Army Reserve is so worthwhile—not just for the Army itself but for individuals and employers alike. The skills developed on exercises like this don’t just stay on the battlefield—they translate directly into civilian careers, building confident, capable leaders in every walk of life. Huge credit to everyone involved for their commitment and determination—you’ve set a solid foundation for the next steps in your careers. 💥 "Best course I've attended in my Army career" "A great space to exist and grow for a week" "A rare opportunity for those members of the regiment who want to develop themselves and lead to step into the ring." #LeadershipDevelopment #ArmyTraining #FutureLeaders #MilitaryExcellence #Resilience #InspirationalGroup #ArmyReserve 🇬🇧 Centre for Army Leadership

The British Army's reserve Armoured Regiment
About us
The Royal Wessex Yeomanry is the UK’s only regiment of part-time tank soldiers, based in South West England, but recruited from across the country. Our soldiers are volunteers with normal jobs and normal lives who give up some of their spare time to train as crews for the Challenger 2 tank. As part-time members of the armed forces, they have access to a wide range of opportunities, including pay and pension, fitness training, sports and travel. The Regiment is a team; a family of ordinary people who work together to achieve the extraordinary.

This weekend saw The Royal Wessex Yeomanry back in Bovington for the weekend, training in the three armoured disciplines of Gunnery, Driving & Maintenance and Comms. Before we got started, though, we got outside in the spring sunshine for a little Battle PT. While part-time tank crews have to be focused on on their technical skills, we are also expected to maintain the basic level of fitness required to operate alongside our regular colleagues. Up for the challenge? We’re always recruiting. #armouredreserve #theonlywayiswessex

After being selected for a commission last summer and then boarded into the post, Capt Liam Kennedy was appointed as second in command for A (Dorset Yeomanry) Squadron this evening. He brings decades of experience as a tank commander and technical instructor to this key leadership role and has already brought impressive energy and enthusiasm to his reserve service since joining us as a SNCO in 2023. We are very grateful to Capt Kennedy’s employers at BAE Systems Maritime – Submarines for their continued commitment to supporting reserve service.

We need a new Squadron Leader for our Devon Squadron, who train in Exeter. This is a great opportunity for a reservist officer or an ex-regular of the required rank. You don’t need an Armoured Corps background, but you do need to be excited about the prospect of spending evenings and weekends getting the very best out of our brilliant volunteer part-time tank soldiers. In return, you’ll get to join a unique regimental family of genuinely extraordinary people and make a real difference as a role model and leader. And tanks. Weekends around armour is obviously a big part of the offer. https://lnkd.in/e9UY9XR3

As the sun rose this morning, The Royal Wessex Yeomanry was cracking on with 2025. The bulk of the regiment, concentrated at Donnington for the weekend, brushed off the Christmas cobwebs with some sunrise Battle PT while our skiers checked in for their flights to join Exercise Snowfox in the Alps. This year is looking like another one filled with opportunities - and we are always recruiting part-time tank crews.

Getting out into the community alongside supportive employers is a crucial part of making sure we attract the right talent to take us into the future. We’re very grateful for the enthusiasm with which Ellis Jones Solicitors LLP have approached their relationship with defence in general and with us in particular. If this is something you think could benefit your business, get in touch with Emily Kadoch at Wessex RFCA to talk about the Armed Forces Covenant. https://lnkd.in/eWhYGWDy

A very warm welcome to our four newest Troopers, who passed out of Army Training Unit (West) in Exeter this morning - one for each of our Squadrons, in #Devon, #Dorset, #Gloucestershire and #Wiltshire. An exciting time to start a part-time career as a tank soldier!

The Royal Wessex Yeomanry reposted this
Did you know that soldiers in the The Royal Wessex Yeomanry are often nicknamed the ‘𝗔𝗿𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀’... ...due to our antecedent Yeomanry regiments raising troops of landowners and farmers from across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Dorset and Devon. After an intense two weeks of training, I'm back in the Savills Petworth office, providing valuations for today's landowners and farmers. If you are looking for a rural valuation or some consultancy advice, please get in contact with me at 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘆𝗮.𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀@𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀.𝗰𝗼𝗺 / 𝟬𝟳𝟴𝟭𝟱 𝟬𝟯𝟮𝟭𝟮𝟱 With thanks to both Savills Rural, who continue to support me as an Employer Member of the Armed Forces Covenant, and The Royal Wessex Yeomanry for the continued training and opportunities. As the UK’s reserve armoured regiment, we depend on strong relationships with supportive employers like Ellis Jones Solicitors LLP, who understand the benefits their employees can take from their training with us. Events like this are a great way for employers to underline their support to their team, and it’s no surprise to see one of Dorset’s newest Armed Forces Covenant ERS Gold Award holders getting stuck in this way! On Friday last week, Trainees and Paralegals from across Ellis Jones Solicitors LLP attended Poole Army Reserve Centre for Op Team Build - a pilot teambuilding day organised and facilitated by The Royal Wessex Yeomanry. A fantastic day had by all, with a range of practical and theoretical tasks developing skills of teamwork, leadership and followership, amongst many more. Really pleased to be able to build on our fantastic relationship with our local Armoured Reserve Unit, and we’re very much looking forward to continuing working with the brilliant team at RWxY for a long time to come! A huge thanks to CO RWxY Colonel Ant Sharman for graciously letting us be his guinea pigs for this event, as well as to OC B Sqn Major Jake Meyer BEM FRGS for giving up his valuable time to plan and deliver such a fantastic day for our junior staff!
