A new report published today by the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee has highlighted the poor state of temporary housing – citing cases of serious damp and mould, excessive cold, mice infestations, and overcrowding. It urges Government to increase the temporary accommodation subsidy as homeless children are being forced to live in ‘appalling conditions’. It is estimated that over the last five years temporary accommodation contributed to the deaths of at least 74 children, of whom 58 were under the age of one – an absolutely shocking and tragic statistic. The Government HAS to look at better ways of providing temporary housing. Modular construction can deliver air space, infill blocks and book-end developments to increase the density of local authority housing sites and estates This approach can provide accommodation much faster than traditional construction and allow local authorities to better utilise existing land and assets.
