“𝙂𝙞𝙢𝙢𝙚, 𝙜𝙞𝙢𝙢𝙚, 𝙜𝙞𝙢𝙢𝙚 𝙖 𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙠𝙚𝙧 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙎𝙬𝙚𝙙𝙚𝙣...” 🇸🇪⚽ Not how I expected to start my trip to Vilnius, but there I was, sat in a Lithuanian restaurant, belting out a chant about Newcastle United Football Club striker, Alexander Isak, to a table of older co-creators from Sweden, Norway, Denmark and the UK (a big thank you to the Swedes for humouring me!). But what brought me there was even better. A few months back, Halina, a brilliant member of our Voice network, told me about her work as an older co-creator for the PAAR NET (PAAR-Net) project, a European initiative championing the involvement of older people as co-creators in research, not just participants. She’d been regularly sharing the Voice model with the PAAR-NET team - talking about it as an experienced, impactful network with a proven structure to support older people to have a real say in research. And then she said: “I think they should hear it from you too.” Next thing I know, I’m being invited to speak in Vilnius - 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙑𝙤𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙖𝙙𝙫𝙤𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙪𝙨. That’s the kind of network I'm so proud to be a part of. One where the community is the connector, where #livedexperience doesn’t just shape the conversation, it opens doors for it. The event was full of enthusiasm, practical energy and, most importantly, the session led by older co-creators was the highlight of the two days. Their stories, their reflections, their wisdom - not as token voices, but as equal partners driving research and making it better. And Halina summed it up perfectly when she addressed the room: “𝙒𝙚 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜. 𝙒𝙚'𝙧𝙚 𝙥𝙪𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝. 𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙟𝙤𝙗 𝙩𝙤 𝙥𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙛𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙗𝙚 𝙨𝙪𝙗𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙤𝙩𝙮𝙥𝙚𝙨.” That’s what Voice is all about. A 2025 study from Anglia Ruskin University reveals that older women, despite having similar qualifications and often more experience, are up to 25 times less likely to be offered an interview than younger candidates. This stark disparity highlights the deep-rooted ageism that continues to limit their employment opportunities.
