Very pleased that we received a big win, a high commendation, and several other commendations at The Newspaper Awards in London last night. We had four titles out of the six shortlisted in the Local Weekly Newspaper of the Year category – and I’m delighted for our team in Enniskillen that The Impartial Reporter claimed top prize. Judges said: “For the second year running, The Impartial Reporter takes the top spot. Judges were full of praise for its brilliant investigations, in-depth reporting and unique front-page designs that made it stand out.” Our runners-up were all commended: Isle of Wight County Press for “offering great value with its rich mix of stories and news coverage”, Salisbury Journal “for a clean, consistent layout that doesn’t compromise editorial for advertising” and The Oxford Times for being “a much-loved weekly that offers strong value, sharp printing, and a well-balanced mix of news and features that lead the local agenda.” In the Regional Supplement/Magazine of the Year category The Northern Echo’s Business IQ was highly commended for “exuding quality, beautifully printed with luxurious cover stack and brilliantly showcases business in the North-East”, while Cheshire Life was commended for “continuing to impress with a well-thought-out layout packed with content and striking imagery that really lifts the pages” and Voice was also commended for “nailing its editorial structure with strong headlines and a clear sense of place.” Oxford Mail was commended in the Daily Newspaper of the Year category for being “a cleanly printed daily with striking front pages and great local news”. Finally, Nancy Fallows was commended in the Newspaper Employee/Team of the Year category for “significantly improving Newsquest’s newspaper sales by enhancing front-page designs.” Well done all! Today's front page is a story that has been featured right across the Newsquest Media Group portfolio from group editor Nigel Burton who has courageously spoken out on his son's battle with cancer. On a personal level, having worked with Nigel every day since I returned to Newsquest in 2023, I was constantly amazed that he kept working through this period, logging in from the hospital ward, cracking on with pages in between appointments. Parenthood is, as it is, a full-time job often juggled with a full-time job and I can't comprehend just how intense this period must have been for the entire family. This month, Newsquest announced Teenage Cancer Trust as its official charity partner for 2025, and this piece excellently details the incredible work they do with our young cancer survivors across the UK. Hopefully this partnership will shine a light on the stories and increase awareness - and revenue - for this worthy good cause.

Should we be concerned that the BBC has used its licence fee muscle to almost double its market share of the local online news market in less than two years. They've done this by diverting resources away from radio and making a big push into local online news. Do we really want a local news future that is only dominated by the Beeb? It’s about time, Ofcom, the regulator that is supposed to supervise the BBC, stepped in. Based on past form, I am not optimistic.

Having launched soft paywalls on our larger local sites four years ago, we have now reached the milestone of 100,000 paying digital subscribers - exceeding our expectations.  And the overall audience to Newsquest’s sites continues to grow with 187 million page views in August, a new record.  To put that in context, the Brighton Argus alone had 8.9 million online views of its articles last month.  #trustedlocalnews

Hot on the heels of our outstanding newspaper sales performance, I'm delighted to share that Newsquest had a double celebration in August: hitting the milestone of 100,000 paying digital subscribers as well as achieving 187 million page views in one month which was a new record for our local news sites. Well done all involved in both amazing achievements! https://lnkd.in/egKDPs5a
