The government is wasting money on expensive 'sticking plasters' such as temporary accommodation – which is no place for a child to grow up. Social housing saves the government, and taxpayer, money in the long run by reducing spending on welfare, health and homelessness – which is 'skyrocketing'. Our Chief Executive, Kate Henderson, on BBC Radio 4 Today discussing our latest research on waiting lists for family-sized social homes, which have exceeded 100 years in some parts of the country. 🔗Read our full story here: https://lnkd.in/gSMchuTy

Today The Guardian and Daily Mirror report on our stark research with Shelter and Crisis, that waiting lists for family sized social homes reach over 100 years in the worst affected areas of England. It's clear that we need an urgent #PlanForHousing and as part of this, the government must significantly boost funding for social housing at the upcoming Spending Review. 🔗Reported in the Daily Mirror: https://lnkd.in/eh2MGwYp 🔗Reported in the Guardian: https://lnkd.in/effakVBU

Our new research, published today with Crisis and Shelter, reveals that struggling families across England have little hope of securing a social home prior to their children growing up. Waiting lists for family-sized social homes are now over 100 years in the worst affected areas in England. In 32 local authorities, the wait is longer than 18 years - an entire childhood - for a three-bedroom social home. The number of families on waiting lists in England has increased by 37% since 2015, six times the rate of the waiting list overall. We critically need a boost in funding for social housing at the upcoming Spending Review to end homelessness and tackle the county’s rapidly worsening housing crisis. 🔗Read our full story here: https://lnkd.in/gSMchuTy

🙏 Thank you to everyone that has joined the campaign to #SaveOurSupportedHousing. There is still time to get involved if you haven’t yet. Across England, thousands of people rely on the safety of supported housing services, including the former Hestia Charity resident quoted below. Yet, without government intervention, these vital services will be lost. 📉 Last year, 1 in 3 providers closed schemes due to funding pressures and 60% say they expect to have to close more in the future. None of us can afford to see this crisis worsening. As we approach the Spending Review, every voice adds strength to our call. Your support for the #SOSHousing campaign helps show the government just how vital supported housing is – and how many stand behind it. 🔗Join our campaign today: https://lnkd.in/eW-QziX2

Supported housing isn’t just bricks and mortar – it’s a vital lifeline for those who need support to live independently. But this lifeline is currently facing a crisis. Without government intervention at the upcoming Spending Review, vital supported housing services could be lost. This means fewer homes for: 🏠 Elderly people in need of accommodation 🏠 Patients needing to leave hospital 🏠 Those fleeing domestic abuse 🏠 Individuals and families experiencing homelessness 🏠 Armed forces veterans Our research shows that 1 in 3 supported housing providers had to close schemes last year because of funding pressures, and 60% are planning to have to close schemes in the future. If you’re an organisation that works with affected individuals, join us in calling for sustainable funding to protect these essential services. "Substantial funding is being diverted away from investing in new affordable homes to pay for building safety costs." Our research shows that social housing providers could build 91,000 new, affordable homes with equal access to building safety funding. We're pleased to see this raised by Joe Powell and Baroness Warwick of Undercliffe. The government must fund building safety in social housing at the upcoming #SpendingReview.
