About us
The Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) is a membership organisation with an exceptional international reputation. For 70 years, its members – the Masters of Wine (MWs) – have been at the forefront of leadership and expertise in the world of wine. The IMW’s mission is to promote excellence, interaction and learning across all sectors of the global wine community. MWs prove their comprehensive understanding of wine by passing the MW exam, recognised worldwide for its rigour and exacting standards. In addition to passing the exam, members must sign the code of conduct before they are entitled to use the initials MW. Today, there are 425 Masters of Wine based in 30 countries. The membership encompasses winemakers, sommeliers, buyers, journalists, shippers, consultants, academics, educators and more. There are 346 students from 43 countries on the 2024-25 MW study programme.

A glimpse of the 27th annual Bordeaux student trip (24-26 March 2025)! From visiting iconic châteaux to guided tastings and deep dives into Bordeaux’s rich wine history. This year was extra special, marking the 170th anniversary of the Bordeaux 1855 Classification! Thank you to Les Conseil des Grands Crus Classés en 1885 and all of the participating Chateâux who hosted visits and the continual support of our MWs. #mastersofwine
