  • We started Marvel with the ambition to always give back. Our 1% pledge has been in place since day one, committing us to donate 1% of the annual salary of each candidate we place from our fee to The Marvel Foundation. The Marvel Foundation partners with charities to help as many people as possible to have the career they deserve. One of the foundation’s charity partners is the The National Autistic Society. Over the last three years, the foundation has been supporting NAS to help more autistic people get into work and succeed once they’re in the door. With the Foundation’s support, NAS have developed a Buddy and Mentor Training Programme, to help give people and workplaces the skills and empathy they need to support autistic colleagues. The training programme is rolling out with companies as we speak, and we’ll update you when we have some results to share.

This week has taught me one thing....candidates looking for a job have had enough and things need to massively change in the UK recruitment industry. It’s extremely clear candidates are at their absolute wits end, demoralised and tired of being treated like shit. They are exhausted and extremely low in morale. The disregard for those 'open to work' or out of work is insane + mind blowing. Candidates are being driven to having mental health issues, I never thought I would hear myself say that. The discrimination, the ghosting, the outdated processes, the scheming, the fake jobs. Every 3rd post I see on this platform is talking about it. Its rife and taking its toll on many. Some of the things you hear these days leaves me absolutely speechless. Its the worst I have known it for a long time. Its disrespectful but also pretty stupid. These candidates are your future clients or your future customers. People talk. The way we recruit needs to change. It needs a complete overhaul. This is peoples lives. They are not products. They have feelings. Remember what they are? There is too much of a 'Deals' before 'People' approach. I absolutely love the recruitment industry, it can do so many good things for people but at the moment the service, the empathy and care just seems to have gone for so many. That said, there are some that massively stand out. These will win in the future as candidates have very long memories. Times in business are tough for everyone, I get it. But Imagine being out of work and having the fear of where your next payslip is coming in? Not being able to support your family or paying your bills. Thats what tough really looks like. We need to clean up our act, bring back the human element and the good old days to hiring. Cheers 🫡 p.s I really really hate writing this content

  • Want to make sure you’re in a good recruitment process with a good company? Here are the green flags to look for: ✅ Transparent job advert: it’s not about style, it’s about substance. The responsibilities are realistic and clear, the salary is advertised, you know where the job is based and how often you’re expected to be in an office. ✅ A nice interviewer: the person interviewing is friendly, warm and seems to enjoy working there. How they make you feel in the interview is probably how they’ll make you feel every day in the job. ✅ Accessibility needs: they pro-actively ask about any adjustments you need, and are more than happy to accommodate them. ✅ A speedy process: these things take time, but you want to be done in 2-3 weeks. Dragging it out for months is never a good sign. ✅ A good salary: an appropriate salary for the role, advertised up front. Secrecy is never going to be a green flag. ✅ Great feedback: detailed, constructive and prompt feedback that shows they care about your success. ✅ Flexibility: part-time, hybrid, condensed hours or other arrangements. They care about the work getting done, not when it gets done. ✅ A great recruiter:  is crucial, naturally. If a recruiter is involved, they should be helping make the process as great as possible for you and the interviewer by showing up, being honest and supporting you through it.

    • A green flag, with our logo on it. Quite on the nose, this one.

Good vibes post 👇🏻 Last week I experienced one of the best gestures I have seen in a recruitment process. Our candidate was mid way through an interview process when they mentioned to our client they were seeking some flexibility so they can take on some shared parental leave. Their partner was returning to work in May and the candidate wanted to allow them to do that but in order for this to happen they were looking for part time hours in their first month of working in a new role. Looking for a new job whilst looking for flexibility. Not easy. They mentioned this to our client and how they have seen so much rejection because of this. How many companies would have ended the interview there and then or thought up some BS excuse to not accommodate it. Not ours. They took it into consideration. They listened. They acted. They offered them the job and offered them part time hours for their first month. Month 2 they will go full time. No dramas. Candidate over the moon. Win win scenario. Amazing to see and great to see the status quo being challenged. This is what putting people first looks like in a recruitment process. Things like this make a difference to people’s lives and reassures you that you are joining an amazing business and culture. I know for a fact so many companies would not have considered this and written the candidate off. Things like this are the future of hiring, it creates immediate loyalty. ‘We are struggling to find candidates’ If I ever hear this statement I always think to myself thats absolute rubbish with all the good people out there at the moment.... But then I realise we have the following: 1. The CV police victimising short stints 2. Clunky application processes that mirrors applying for GCHQ 3. Career gaps treated like someone has been locked away for the crime of the century 4. Age discrimination 5. Interview processes that are like the Krypton Factor 6. Job requirements as long my wife’s shopping list 7. Part time workers seen as being lazy 8. Chaining employees to an office to act out the new series of Big Brother 9. Losing candidates because your interview process is longer than the TV series ‘Lost’ 10. You hire on ‘Culture fit’ rather than ‘Culture add’ Its Monday. The sun is shining. Turn that frown upside down and start removing the above from your recruitment process. Your struggles will turn into opportunities I guarantee it. Who's with me on this?
