We’re excited to watch their growth, the connections they make, and the impact they’ll have in the UK and global venture ecosystems. “Don’t sell a climate solution. Sell a better solution.” Once upon a time, people believed that being “green” would be the key selling point of their product. The prevailing thought was: People are willing to pay a premium for sustainability. The logic was: 🙋🏻♀️ People’s customer bases are “asking for” green products ♻️ Companies can use the fact that they’re greener in their marketing ⚖️ Regulation, industry trends, etc. will make going green necessary, so there’s an incentive to be an industry leader and companies will be willing to invest upfront and pay more More and more, I’m hearing this simply isn’t the case. The market has shifted and instead we have: 🫵🏻 Increased difficulty talking about “going green” in marketing without being accused of greenwashing 📉 A slower economy and a cost-of-living crisis that means customers are more price sensitive and less likely to intentionally pick a more expensive green product 🙅🏻 Large corporations are less and less willing to pay a premium for green products What does this mean? Simply put: products and innovations in climate need to be competitive with existing offerings. We can’t guarantee industry customers will always buy green. We CAN assume they will always buy BETTER. Whether that be cheaper, faster, more efficient, or simply solving their problem in a way competitors can’t. So the real question for climate tech isn’t how to build a climate solution. It’s how to build the best solution: one that solves your customer’s problem and also happens to be great for planet. This was my take on the panel at the New Climate Summit, run by the London Venture Capital Network. What do you think? #Climatetech #Greenpremiums #Innovation
