When we opened our first pub – the Mash Tun in 1996 – it was like nothing Brighton had seen before. Ground-breaking enough to be controversial, it has since become the blueprint in Brighton, and the building block for a group of independent pubs that has grown to 56 in number across that city and London. Laine pubs are amazing places to be – people invest in them emotionally, making them their ‘third places’ – a second home, a place to meet, discuss ideas, hatch plans or catch up. So its a real honour to be there with them, helping them feel a part of the place. The individuals, the conversations, the ideas – no day is ever the same when you’re in a Laine establishment. That’s why we run pubs. There’s nowhere else we’d rather be. Many of our pubs have a focus on the experience, whether that is a circus show, VR gaming, vegan food, 10 screens of interesting sport, live music or immersive games. Yes, we’ll give you the perfect serve, but great drinks are just the start.

There is something incredibly special about receiving the kind of recognition from our industry that is inherent in winning an award at the The Morning Advertiser Publican Awards. And so I’m over the moon for everyone involved in Laine that at this year’s gala event, our business came out as the winner of Best Late Night Operator and Best Partnership Pub Company. Laine is in its 30th year of creating engaging pub and beer experiences for its free-thinking, fun loving, culturally savvy and environmentally aware customer base and will continue to do so whatever the universe chooses to throw at this heroic industry of ours. And let’s face it, there has been some relentless throwing going on over the last few years, with not much sign of let-up in the near term. I can say heroic because for centuries pubs have fought hard, often against the odds, to maintain channels of togetherness so important to human wellbeing, and to champion new art, entertainment and ideas, so important to societal advancement. And there’s been a bit of beer and food sold along the way too, so important for the economic wellbeing of the nation. So for Laine to receive the awards for Best Late Night Operator and Best Partnership Pub Company from our contemporaries in this heroic industry is, as I said to Mark Durden-Smith on the night of the Publican Awards, a career high for me, and a source of great pride. Since the business was founded in 1996 we have set out to constantly evolve our pub propositions to ensure that they continue to remain relevant. To do that, we have needed to work with creative management partners and support teams who really get what the business is trying to achieve, which is primarily to ignite every moment - however high or low tempo - for our customers. So the winning of the awards is testament to the brilliance of Laine’s management team, support staff and management partners. They have taken it to another level over the last year and deserve massive congratulations for what they have achieved. I knew when I stepped back from the CEO role six months ago, that the business was in excellent hands. These awards are a key demonstration of that and a very proud moment for me.
