Why are more young people struggling to attend school, and what can we do about it? Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) is rising. Each case can have a complex, personal story that can leave some families feeling lost and some schools unsure of how to help. In this short video, Dr Lynne Green, consultant clinical psychologist and Kooth’s chief clinical officer explores the often-hidden reasons behind EBSA, its ripple effects, and why a compassionate, tailored response is crucial. Sometimes it’s more than just an empty chair. A missed register. A quiet corridor. A space in the classroom that stays unfilled. For many young people, school isn’t just a place of learning, it can also be a source of anxiety, overwhelm or emotional distress. Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA) is a growing issue affecting children and young people across the UK, and the reasons behind it are often complex and deeply personal. This week, we're highlighting EBSA, raising awareness and sharing practical ways to offer support. "It's not about students refusing to come to school; it's about understanding the emotional barriers they're facing." – Jack, Assistant Head Teacher. In this episode, we speak with Jack, an assistant head teacher from a Buckinghamshire secondary school, about the growing concern of Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA). With over a decade of teaching experience, Jack offers a compassionate perspective on how EBSA affects students and staff. He shares insights into recognising the signs and implementing supportive strategies within the school environment. EBSA presents complex challenges, but through empathy and structured support, we can make a difference. If you're an education professional seeking to better understand and support students struggling with school attendance due to emotional factors, this conversation is on you want to hear. 👉 https://lnkd.in/ejxrQ2p7 #education #pastoralcare #EBSA #schoolattendance #mentalhealthinschools #QwellPodcast

“My parents say they don’t care what grades I get, so why do I still feel so much pressure?” We hear this from young people more often than you might think. Even when the adults around them aren’t piling on the pressure, many still carry a weight to achieve, leaving them feeling confused, heavy, and not knowing how to talk about it. Our counsellors and practitioners offer support to thousands of young people. Here's some advice Dr Kerry recently shared in answer to the question above on grades and exam pressure. It's the kind of support that helps them make sense of these feelings and reminds them they’re not alone. This is a video you can share directly with the young people in your life, whether you’re a parent, carer, teacher, youth worker or someone they trust. At Kooth Digital Health, we’re committed to designing our service with young people, for young people. This has been an incredible learning opportunity for them - and us!" Head of Promotion and Engagement and Kooth Future Council organiser, Alexa Gooder. Kooth Future Council gives young people a creative platform to lead conversations around mental health. After an incredible response to our competition, ten winners joined a series of masterclasses with creative industry experts, building skills in content creation, illustration, and spoken word. With the help of Ravensbourne University London, we held an in-person workshop., the day was packed with vox pops, zines, posters, and powerful discussions on mental health. 🎤 Luke Vernon: "The Kooth Future Council is an amazing chance for young people to harness creativity to spark conversations about mental health." 🎨 Eva Malley led a hands-on session on zine-making and illustration, giving our young creatives the tools to visually express their mental health experiences. 📝 Meanwhile, Dan Whitlam joined us online for an interactive spoken word workshop, guiding our winners through poetry and performance as a way to articulate emotions in a raw and authentic way. A huge thank you to Ravensbourne University London for hosting us and to their students for their invaluable help on the day. "We didn't have the accessibility to all of this stuff in the world that really influences young minds. And I just wanted to take a look at it, i'm not blaming anyone - I just thought maybe we're all accountable, and we should have a conversation about it." - Stephen Graham speaking on the Netflix series Adolescence. It's important to encourage young people to reflect on the pressures and content they engage with on social media. Our upcoming webinar for parents and carers explores navigating online spaces safely and providing tools to address these very issues.
