Our research for the road runoff whitepaper raised a thought-provoking question: Could more be done to make vehicles and road surfaces sustainable? 🤔 The answer isn't as simple as a clear-cut yes. That’s because every component in a vehicle serves a specific function, and sustainable alternatives aren’t always viable. For example, tyres create friction against the road surface to improve grip, and although removing this would stop particulates being released, tyres would lose their key function. 🛞 Although slow, progress IS being made. For example, UK tyre manufacturer ENSO is creating harder-wearing tyres for electric vehicles which will release less particulate matter! 🚗 But there’s still a long way to go. When the initial SuDS design presented challenges to Sheffield City Council, we stepped in to provide a solution that met the application's demands. 💪 A new design was required, leading to the proposal of an alternative, bespoke design of precast reinforced concrete check dams.
