The James Paget has secured the purchase of land next to its current site, which will be used to develop Future Paget – a new hospital for our patients, staff and communities in Great Yarmouth and Waveney. The Department of Health and Social Care has provided £9.8m of funding for the James Paget to purchase land from Great Yarmouth Borough Council to the west of its current site, which will be used for building the new hospital. James Paget Hospital is also sharing its vision for the new hospital to gather views on the outline scale and position of the future hospital design, and is inviting people to attend open events across Great Yarmouth and Waveney to view the plans for Future Paget. Our new Orthopaedic Outpatient Centre is taking shape at speed! Groundworks started just last month – and last week the modules that form the new centre were delivered on site by lorry and inched into position by a crane. Delivered by construction partner Darwin Group the new Orthopaedic Outpatient Centre will feature nine consultation and examination rooms and a modernised plaster bay, as well as improved staff office and rest areas, with opening scheduled for May. Its creation will mean that the space currently occupied by our orthopaedic outpatients services in the hospital can be developed to provide an expanded Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit. SDEC is a way of providing care that sees patients with urgent, non-life-threatening conditions being assessed, diagnosed, and treated on the same day, aiming to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions. Capital funding of £4.2 million has come from NHS England for both the creation of the Orthopaedic Outpatient Centre and expansion of SDEC facilities.

Any good quality bras that you have to donate will go to a good cause. The Theatre bar area will be open if you would like to purchase light refreshments and Sarah and Cath look forward to welcoming you to the Theatre.

As part of our celebration of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re putting a spotlight on staff who have chosen an apprenticeship to further their career in healthcare. One example is Katie Annison, who works as an assistant in our Imaging Department. Katie is currently studying for a higher apprenticeship/foundation degree in health studies at City College, Norwich. Her route into healthcare started four years ago, when she began volunteering at the James Paget, helping patients with their meals in the evenings and at weekends. “Volunteering gave me the opportunity to give my time to support individuals as I am passionate about patient care,” she said. Soon, she had the opportunity to join the hospital’s ultrasound team, where her work was soon recognised when she won a coveted Paget’s People chair and chief executive commendation in 2022, for setting up a wellbeing corner for the department’s patients, and for showing them compassion and reassurance when having their scans. Now, Katie is in the second of a two-year course which sees her attend the college one day per week, while gaining practical experience in the hospital. “I would recommend this course because it opens up so many opportunities in the NHS,” said Katie. “It has boosted my confidence massively by giving me a better understanding of healthcare and, once completed, I will achieve a qualification for an Assistant Practitioner role.” You can hear and read more from some of our former and current apprentices on our website here; https://lnkd.in/ezKTHNm3

The James Paget has had plans approved which will support the movement of its Orthopaedic Outpatient services to a new location on the existing hospital site, to facilitate the development of an improved Same Day Emergency Care service. The hospital has received funding from NHS England to create a boosted Same Day Emergency Care Service, which is a way of providing care that allows specialists at the hospital to assess, diagnose and treat patients on the same day of arrival, who would otherwise have been admitted to hospital for an overnight stay. You can read more about the project on our website here; https://lnkd.in/eC_4HFCf
