Understanding Attendance Insights "The answers are in the room, but it’s the research that points us in the right direction.” What surprised staff at Education South West multi-academy trust was that parents at its schools knew full well that they were breaking the rules when they kept their children at home – and yet they did it anyway. “That was when I realised my ‘Follow the rules’ approach to attendance was never going to work,” “Policy and protocol, while important, would not do it. I had to find a way to get into the living rooms of these families and break down barriers. Find out how Understanding Attendance can improve your attendance. All children have a fundamental right to education. Equally important is their right to feel safe in the school environment. A new study, out today, which draws from the TIMSS dataset and cites ImpactEd Group and TEP research, suggests that this basic expectation is no longer being met for many students in England, particularly teenage girls. Since 2011 the percentage of 14-year-olds (Year 9s) in England who strongly agree they feel safe at school has changed dramatically. Prior to the pandemic – from 2011 to 2019 – approximately 85% of teenagers reported feeling safe at school. However, by 2023, this figure has dropped to just 70%. Our new Family Engagement Taskforce launches today to find the best means of building consistent and meaningful engagement with parents and carers. At the beginning of this academic year, ImpactEd Group launched a nationwide research initiative focused on engagement in schools, to determine whether levels of engagement of key stakeholder groups could act as an early warning sign for future educational outcomes, such as attendance and attainment. Family engagement is an important part of that picture. The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) cites 97 studies linking parental engagement to improved outcomes, with data suggesting it can contribute approximately four months of additional progress for students. And yet, no standardised framework exists to track parental engagement with live benchmarks, hindering schools' ability to evaluate effectiveness. Thus, we are inviting schools and trusts with successful family engagement strategies to share practices and join our research project as we build a comprehensive national picture, providing data and insights to help predict, intervene, and support pupils. Tell us what has worked here https://lnkd.in/e2NVJqm3 and join us as participants on this research project as we build the picture of family engagement across the country. hello@impactedgroup.uk Read the full story in Schools Week https://lnkd.in/eWn4WUBV Find out more about the Family Engagement Taskforce https://lnkd.in/eeSYUUUR #education #schools #family
