Bamboo and our lions share the characteristics of strength and resilience that Hong Kong has always demonstrated. These sculptures are a labour of love by local artists we collaborated with, as well as by our volunteers who learnt about bamboo craftsmanship in the process. Well done to the 10% of you who correctly selected 1935 as the year that Stephen and Stitt were first put on guard outside our head office in Hong Kong. Our very first pair of bronze lion sculptures were unveiled at our Shanghai headquarters in 1923, but the replicas that live in Hong Kong weren’t put in place until the opening of the new headquarters on Des Voeux Road in October 1935.
