Welsh Government has announced £5.5 million in funding for hospices across Wales — providing essential support at a time when services are under intense pressure from rising costs and growing demand. The £5.5m cash injection, which is in addition to the £3 million uplift in recurrent funding in the 2025–26 budget, will help Wales’ 12 NHS-commissioned hospices, manage financial pressures and ensure staff are paid fairly. Matthew Brindley, Policy and Advocacy Manager for Wales at Hospice UK, welcomed the announcement: “This will come as a huge relief to hospice charities… particularly in meeting the need to pay staff a fair salary that keeps pace with their NHS colleagues.” Liz Booyse, Chair of Hospices Cymru, added: “Our services provide vital care to over 20,000 children and adults each year. This funding is a significant step forward.” While this is a positive development, both Hospice UK and Hospices Cymru emphasise the need for a sustainable, long-term funding model to ensure hospices can continue delivering high-quality, compassionate care for years to come. Today, we’re at Stormont giving evidence to the Health Committee Inquiry into access to palliative care services in Northern Ireland. We welcome the Committee’s focus on palliative care - it’s not just about the end of life, but about helping people live well for as long as possible, even alongside curative treatments. As people live longer with complex conditions, access to quality palliative care is more important than ever. Thank you to the Committee for having us and for recognising the vital role of hospice care.

ITV Calendar ran a powerful segment on Rotherham Hospice's need to raise £1 million to keep vital services running. Their CEO, Mat Cottle-Shaw highlights the increasing difficulty of fundraising as people face financial pressures, and joins calls for a new, sustainable funding model. While the situation remains worrying, we look forward to continuing to work with the government with the goal of reforming the way hospices are funded long-term.
Did you catch us on the telly? 📺 It was an absolute honour to welcome ITV Calendar into our hospice, where they spoke with patients who kindly shared their experiences of life here at Rotherham Hospice. They also gave us the opportunity to highlight the very real challenges we — and hospices across the UK — are currently facing. 🔎Did you know? Our projected costs for 2025/26 stand at £9.5 million. To meet this, we now need to raise 61% of this — that’s over £5.8 million — through, donations, retail, and other sources. Crucially, this includes raising £1.2 million more than last year, just to continue delivering the same level of care. We want to say a heartfelt thank you to our local MPs who continue to advocate for hospice funding in parliament. And of course, to you — our amazing community — for always showing up, giving generously, and believing in what we do. Your support keeps our doors open and our care going. 👉 Find out more about our work — and how you can support us — at rotherhamhospice.org.uk Hospice UK #LivingLifesWishes #RotherhamHospice #HospiceCare #EndOfLifeCare #TogetherForHospices
