As climate risk reshapes the real estate landscape, our built environment must not only adapt—but regenerate. In a recent Forbes article on the escalating impacts of floods, fires and extreme weather, HOK’s Sean Quinn, director of Regenerative Design, shares his vision for a more resilient and life-centered approach to design. He emphasizes that regenerative design goes beyond decarbonization to restore ecosystems and support health and well-being. “We look at nature itself and millions of years of evolution for the common goal of environmental stewardship and to enhance a site’s ecosystem’s performance,” says Quinn. His work explores how thoughtful design solutions—like passive solar building envelope designs, rainwater collection and maximizing daylight—can reduce water and energy use while supporting the ecosystem. As return-to-office mandates reshape workplace strategies, the conversation is shifting to how companies better use their space. In a recent Raconteur article, HOK’s Tim Hatton emphasizes this point: “To guarantee a strong return on investment, executives should consider what employees need to be happy and productive then prioritize investment in those areas.” Arup’s new HOK-designed office in Birmingham embodies this approach—prioritizing employee well-being, sustainability and inclusivity. With dedicated mindfulness zones and customizable lighting, as well as 96% construction waste diverted from landfills, the space fosters a healthier work environment while aligning with Arup’s sustainability commitments. Arup has already seen a 10% increase in office attendance and a rise in social activities since opening the new headquarters. Ultimately, workplace design is about making targeted, meaningful changes that enhance employee experience and engagement. As Hatton puts it, “Before splashing out on the latest office fads, stop and think about what your workforce needs and what you can do with your existing space.” What do you think are the most important elements of a successful office redesign? HOK’s Melissa Clark and a dedicated team at HOK are changing the game for women’s sports venue design. Collaborating with her colleagues and different user groups, Melissa is exploring how to better design these facilities for players and fans alike. “We do know our physiology is different; we socialize differently,” said Melissa. “It used to be in women’s sports, ‘Let’s make it pink and smaller,’ and this wasn’t just equipment, this was everything. That’s not really tailored enough for women.” From reimagining player arrival spaces as fashion-forward runways to creating vibrant, social-first seating sections tailored to diverse, first-time fanbases (both shown below), Melissa is leading the charge in questioning the long-standing defaults of venue design. By understanding how women play, experience and connect through sport, the working group can thoughtfully curate women’s sports venues that elevate performance, community and culture. HOK is proud to celebrate the groundbreaking of Kedren Children’s Village, a first-of-its-kind pediatric behavioral health campus in South Los Angeles. Designed by HOK in partnership with McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., this pioneering facility will set a new standard for compassionate, community-based mental health care. Once complete, the 103,000-sq.-ft. campus will provide critical psychiatric, crisis stabilization, outpatient and transitional housing services to children and families in an environment designed for healing, safety and dignity. Our design integrates biophilic elements, natural light and outdoor therapy spaces inspired by the history and culture of the surrounding community. Friday's groundbreaking event brought together community leaders, healthcare advocates and project stakeholders, all united in the mission to transform pediatric mental health services in an underserved community. Airports are complex spaces serving many different people. How can architecture and design cut through that complexity to create a beautiful, efficient and welcoming experience for everyone? In our latest article, HOK’s Matthew Needham and Ana-Maria Drughi share six key design strategies that are helping airports deliver better experiences for travelers, staff and operators alike. Peek at three of the strategies below, and find more examples in the full article: https://bit.ly/4llNQzu ✈ Showcase the local culture through welcoming spaces, like Monterey Regional Airport’s new five-gate terminal that reflects coastal California through its design. ✈ Respect nature through sustainable and resilient designs. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport’s Concourse D Annex is the first airport terminal in the U.S. to achieve LEED v4 Silver certification and features a unique timber-and-steel truss system built from locally sourced trees. ✈ Add in flexibility so the airport can evolve. The new Salt Lake City International Airport features two linear concourses with dual taxi lanes that improve aircraft circulation and support easy expansion in the future. 📸 Long Beach Airport (David Lena Photography), Monterey Regional Airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Haywood Chan Photography), Salt Lake City International Airport (Bruce Damonte Photography)
