Yesterday, our year one and two Building Control Apprentices enjoyed an insightful tour of a major project we're currently inspecting - the new Hertfordshire Constabulary Headquarters in Welwyn Garden City with Willmott Dixon. A big thank you to Marious C for hosting us! This impressive 9,000-square-metre building, designed by Vincent + Gorbing, will provide an ultra-sustainable working environment for over 600 operational staff, achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating. The new HQ will house essential services, including the Major Crime Unit, victim services, the dog unit, senior leadership, and operational support teams, significantly reducing long-term running costs. Construction is set to be completed by summer 2026. One standout feature we admired is the central four-storey atrium crowned with a stunning glulam timber structure roof! We're looking forward to seeing it finished. Yesterday, Hertfordshire Building Control was pleased to attend the Herts & Beds Constructing Excellence Club Networking Breakfast, hosted at the impressive Altro Limited HQ in Letchworth. We were particularly inspired by Stephanie Kyle of Floyd Slaski Architects Ltd, who delivered a thought-provoking talk on Designing for Neurodiversity and Inclusive Environments. Rather than stopping at compliance with Part M, Stephanie champions a broader, more holistic perspective on what true inclusivity means in the built environment. She explores a wide range of critical issues, including: 🧠 Neurodiversity and neurodegenerative conditions 🕯️ Perception and sensory input - using materials and interior design to soften hard architecture 🔶 The use of naturalistic and geometric forms to reduce cognitive overload 🧭 Intuitive navigation and operation 🚻 Inclusive design A huge thank you to Herts & Beds Constructing Excellence Club, Altro Limited, CEO Richard Kahn and of course Stephanie Kyle for an impactful morning. Our CEO Gary Cass is at the Fire Safety Event (FSE) today, participating in a vital panel discussion titled 'Signing off your building's fire safety under the new building control regime'. Led by the Fire Protection Association, the panel explored critical topics around effectively delivering the approval process required by the new building control regime. The discussion provided valuable insights into what Principal Accountable Persons need to be doing to comply with these updated requirements. The session was very engaging, with a packed audience asking many questions about building regulation compliance and fire safety.
