About us

Established in 1993, GLL is a charitable social enterprise and workers cooperative. Over the past 30 years we’ve grown to become the UK’s largest leisure and cultural trust. Under our customer facing brand Better, we operate 240 leisure centres, 120 libraries, and 15 children’s centres in partnership with over 60 local councils, public agencies and sporting organisations. You’ll find us working in a multitude of diverse locations; from some of the UK’s most deprived communities to world-class sporting venues such as the Manchester Aquatics Centre, Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, Lee Valley VeloPark and the Copper Box Arena. We welcome over 57 million visitors a year, generating over £440m in social value as we strive to help as many people as possible lead healthier, happier and longer lives. In 2007 we launched the GLL Sports Foundation, which has grown into the largest independent athlete support programme in the country. It has provided 28,000 athlete awards across Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth, Deaflympic and Special Olympic sports at a total value of £15 million. We are committed to providing excellent working conditions and sector-leading career development to our staff. We are one of only 13,000 organisations in the UK to sign up to the Real Living Wage and are an Investors In People Gold accredited employer. We are proud to work together with national charities and Government departments including the British Red Cross, Diabetes UK, Age UK, The Mix and NHS England on initiatives to promote mental wellbeing and physical health.

Social Entrepreneur, curious about doing business differently

A 100 year old Arts and Crafts public library, 20 children’s book authors and a Mad Hatter’s tea party!  What more could you want to launch GLL’s latest initiative? I am a Trustee of GLL which is a Charitable Social Enterprise and the biggest provider of Public Libraries. It was a delight to attend the launch of GLL Literary Foundation #GLF2025 which aims to support new authors, to boost children’s literacy and to champion public libraries. The modern public library system in the UK was established by the Public Libraries Act of 1850, which gave local boroughs the power to establish free public libraries and museums.  The event was hosted in Battersea Reference Library, a beautiful Arts and Craft building with an arched glass roof.  Simon Hogg, the leader of Wandsworth Council, which is this year’s Borough of Culture made a lovely speech recognising the amazing impact libraries have on everyone in the community and what an asset they are for authors.  Libraries and librarians are a wonderful source of information and quiet space to write.  Over the years some impressive authors have lived in Wandsworth including JK Rowling, Louis de Bernières and Joseph Coelho the former Waterstones Children's Laureate, who is the Patron of the Foundation. Well done to Rebecca Gediking FRSA, GLL Head of Libraries and the team at GLL for putting together the Foundation and for organising such a joyful event. In the International Year of Cooperatives #IYC2025, it is the great to see GLL demonstrating that Cooperatives Build a Better World.
