Big smiles illuminated our colleagues' faces during the volunteering day at the Grange Project, a pivotal rewilding charity in Monmouthshire. ERMers from the Cardiff office dedicated their time to establishing raised beds for a market garden designed to educate local schools about food production and permaculture. Pigs play an integral role in the Grange Project and the rewilding process. Their natural behaviors—rooting in the soil—create bare earth essential for seed germination, while their grazing promotes plant diversity, and their manure acts as a natural fertilizer. Our colleagues embraced the opportunity to engage with these friendly animals, enhancing the experience for all involved. Amelia Yule, Associate Consultant and the organizer of this initiative, emphasized the value of stepping away from the office for hands-on work. “I wanted to organize this volunteering day as I believe it provides a unique opportunity to learn and contribute to our local environment. It was a boost for team morale as we collaborated on a project where metrics and deadlines took a backseat. Although we are environmental consultants, we don't always get to see the difference our work has made with our own eyes. Whilst at the Grange Project, we could see the planting beds filling up and the mountain of mud shrinking, and it felt good to see where our energy was going, even if it was just a small change.” #ERMCareers #VolunteeringDay #Volunteering

Together with the Ocean Energy Pathway (OEP), we have published a comprehensive joint report that examines the gross value added (GVA) generated by offshore wind projects in Akita Prefecture and assesses their potential to stimulate local economic growth and job creation. The study evaluates the GVA and local employment impact through both “possible” and “potential” scenarios—demonstrating that, under current conditions, offshore wind projects could generate a GVA of approximately 356Bn JPY (2.38Bn USD) and support nearly 34,000 jobs. With feasible investments aimed at boosting local supplier capabilities, these figures could rise to around 570Bn JPY (3.81Bn USD) and 52,000 jobs over the projects’ lifespans. Drawing upon an input–output methodology enhanced by ERM’s proprietary offshore wind project cost model (LEnSTM), the report provides an independent analysis of the economic ripple effects associated with Akita’s eight offshore wind projects. Key recommendations include: - Maximizing local participation in O&M - Creating long-term offshore wind pipeline - Coordinated supply chain development - Multi-prefectural collaboration - Human resource development - Maximizing economic benefits Discover the detailed findings here: https://lnkd.in/dM6Ngf7C #OffshoreWind #RenewableEnergy #Renewables

What if you could transform your approach to sustainability? The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) is here to redefine how companies engage with their supply chains. This regulation targets seven commodities, which are the main drivers of deforestation and forest degradation, emphasizing the importance of due diligence on every shipment. There are plans to extend the regulation to other wooded areas, natural ecosystems, commodities and to financial players at a later stage. Initially adopted in December 2022 and enforced from June 2023, companies were expected to comply by December 30, 2024. However, recognizing the challenges many faced, the EU Council has granted a 12-month extension, pushing the compliance date to December 30, 2025. What is the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)? Why is it transformative? Who should take note? These are only some of the questions that have arisen since February, when the new PPWR came into force in the European Union. This regulation will significantly influence all businesses operating within the EU, irrespective of their global headquarters. Every company introducing products into the EU market is directly affected, as the regulation encompasses all participants in the packaging supply chain across the European Union, including manufacturers, importers, retailers, and waste management entities. It pertains to every type of packaging and packaging waste entering the EU market, thereby influencing the entire lifecycle of product packaging, from production to disposal. More than just an update to the existing Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD) it supersedes, the PPWR transforms the approach to packaging design, manufacturing, marketing, usage, and disposal within the EU. ERM topic experts Annette Koehler, Beth Murphy, and Michael Spielmann have put together the blog “Comply, Save Money and Grow - how PPWR will revolutionize packaging in the EU and beyond“ to help you learn more: https://lnkd.in/dUnHRy2R #PPWR #PPWD #Packaging
