How do you model an entire city’s airflow and still keep simulation costs under control? In urban environments, everything from wind microclimates to pollutant dispersion needs to be accurately predicted — often at scale. Proprietary CFD tools struggle with cost and flexibility at this level. That’s where open-source CFD makes a difference. 📘 Our eBook explores how engineers and planners are using HELYX and high-performance computing to run large-scale CFD simulations tailored to real-world urban challenges — from smoke control in subway tunnels to wind-driven rain on building façades. ➡️ Download the free ebook: https://zurl.co/CbYco #CFD #OpenSource #UPM #AEC

The average temperature of cities is increasing by 0.5°C (0.9°F) per decade. 🌡️ Consequently, urban areas are now ~29% hotter than surrounding rural areas, resulting in the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. If urban temperatures continue to rise, cities will become unbearable to live and work in, and the number of premature deaths will likely increase. To try and solve this problem, local governments are now prioritising thermal comfort to understand how air temperature, sunlight, wind, humidity and vegetation are affecting inner city areas. However, accurately modelling such complex physical interactions demands advanced CFD techniques. HELYX, our open-source CFD software, captures all the physics in one model, allowing engineers to run solar calculations whilst analysing the position of the sun and accounting for the cooling effect of vegetation. This is empowering authorities to make more informed and impactful decisions to cut temperatures and improve the thermal comfort of their cities for the public. 🌞 🔗 Read more in our latest blog post: https://zurl.co/zQGK1 #CFD #ThermalComfort #UrbanCooling #SmartCities

How do you make a travel trailer more aerodynamic? Towing a trailer increases fuel consumption by up to 50%. For electric vehicles, the impact is even worse—reducing range drastically. The problem isn’t just weight. It’s aerodynamics. Lightship tackled this challenge by designing the AE.1 Trailer from the outside in, using CFD simulations to optimize airflow and reduce drag. The result? A more efficient, aerodynamic trailer that makes EV towing viable. How did they do it?
