About us

English National Ballet has a long and distinguished history. Founded in 1950 as London Festival Ballet by the great English dancers Alicia Markova and Anton Dolin, it has been at the forefront of ballet’s growth and evolution ever since. English National Ballet brings world class ballet to the widest possible audience through performances across the UK and on eminent international stages; its distinguished orchestra, English National Ballet Philharmonic; its digital platforms Ballet on Demand and BalletActive; being a UK leader in creative learning and engagement practice, building innovative partnerships to deliver flagship programmes such as Dance for Parkinson’s; and through talent development initiatives including Ballet Futures which looks to create a more diverse and inclusive future for the artform. English National Ballet continues to add ground-breaking new works to its repertoire whilst celebrating the tradition of great classical ballet, gaining acclaim for artistic excellence and creativity. 2019 saw the Company enter a new chapter in its history with a move to a purpose-built state-of-the-art home in East London, allowing a renewed commitment to creativity, ambition, and connection to more people, near and far, than ever before.

  • 📢 Applications are open to audition for our Ballet Futures programme. If you know a dancer aged 8-12 from African Diaspora, Caribbean, South Asian or South East Asian heritage, please do share this opportunity with them! Deadline is 21 May, 12noon.   Being part of Ballet Futures brings amazing support and opportunities to talented young dancers. Find out more about these plus the full application guidelines, audition dates and more at https://lnkd.in/e7hsKCsp   Ballet Futures: The Pipeline Project is a children’s training programme that encourages and incentivises young dancers from traditionally underrepresented groups in ballet to participate in sustained professional ballet training from the earliest possible point. Thirty five dancers across the UK are part of the programme: some have performed on stage with English National Ballet, and several participants have joined vocational ballet schools already.    The project is delivered in association with five schools nationwide: Adagio School of Dance in Brentwood, Dupont Dance Stage School in Leicester, Spotlight Stage School in Birmingham, Viv'Art Movement Academy in East London and West London School of Dance.

  • 🗣️ “It was filled with a combination of adrenaline, inspiration and love for dance, and we felt that every moment was a dream come true.” A wonderful testimony to the power of performing from one of the dancers from English National Ballet School who made up the 97 strong line-up of performers who took to stage at Re-Play – ENB’s annual performance platform at our home in East London. Over five months of planning went into the event, from commissioning choreographers and composers to rehearsals starting through to delivery on the weekend of performances. The weekend saw dancers from across London including Newham and Tower Hamlets and as far as Ipswich, West Sussex, Dorset and Bristol come together for this celebration of ENB’s 75th anniversary. The dancers were joined by 22 creatives including choreographers, rehearsal directors, costume designers, composers and musicians, who all united to perform for over 400 people across two days. A truly special experience, one of the audience members told us “The performances were so joyful, moving, expressive and conveyed the performers’ love of dance.” 📸 Photography by ASH

  • Feel more with English National Ballet 💗 Last week we announced our 2025/2026 season, and the news that 2024's acclaimed Nutcracker will return to the London Coliseum, alongside Akram Khan's iconic reimagining of Giselle! After over 100,000 people joined us at the London Coliseum in 2024/2025 season, we're excited to welcome new audiences to discover the boundless possibilities of ballet with the two exciting titles we're taking to the West End this winter. Returning for a five week run (11 Dec - 11 Jan), Aaron S. Watkin and Arielle Smith's acclaimed production of Nutcracker is back to bring you a delicious taste of Christmas delight. The Stage has called it: "A feast for the eyes... it all feels like a real Christmas gift". In January, we mark ten years since the premiere of Akram Khan's Giselle, with this unforgettable masterpiece taking to the stage for the first time at the London Coliseum. "It may well rank as a masterpiece of 21st century dance" (The Mail on Sunday), so whether you're seeing it for the first time or making a return visit this is an experience you won't forget. Both of these shows are now on sale: https://lnkd.in/d9vHkYV 📸 Photography by ASH and Isabella Turolla

  • This week is #SignLanguageWeek!  Run annually by the British Deaf Association, the week aims to drive awareness of the importance of accessible communication and the essential role sign language plays in building inclusive communities.   This April we have a BSL Interpreted Performance of My First Ballet: Swan Lake, and BSL Interpreted Family Workshops at The Peacock Theatre.   At this performance, a BSL signer will use sign language to communicate what is being spoken by the on-stage narrator who describes sections of this ballet, designed for children aged three and upwards.  Know someone who would benefit from a BSL-interpreted performance? Share this post with them and don’t forget to sign up for our Access newsletter here: https://bit.ly/40y1h5L
