About us
We specialise in high-value and complex patent matters. Our multidisciplinary team combines patent attorneys, litigators and commercial IP lawyers in three of the world’s main patent markets - Germany, UK and USA and now also in the Nordics through our recent expansion into Sweden. Our patent drafting, prosecution and challenges practice obtains and defends high-value and complex patents for clients, and invalidates patents held by others during post-grant proceedings including oppositions at the European Patent Office (EPO). EIP’s litigation practice has built a strong reputation for quality and success amongst its competitors and clients, with a strong track record including success in a landmark ruling on Standard Essential Patents (SEPs) from the UK Supreme Court. Increasingly our patent attorneys work closely with the litigation team in the UK and Germany providing additional technical expertise on large scale international patent litigation matters. We have represented clients in hundreds of oppositions before the EPO. We counsel clients on strategic patent portfolio development, and have implemented high-level IP strategies for some of the world’s largest companies. We also offer commercial advice on the exploitation and use of the full range of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) including patents, trademarks, design rights, copyright and other ancillary issues arising in relation to data protection and rights of privacy.

It was great to see Darren Smyth at the CIPA Student Conference 2025 in Manchester yesterday! Darren's insightful session on imposter syndrome and mental health were well received by the student members of CIPA. Later, he switched roles to judge at the Moot Court. A big thank you to the organisers!
I had a gruelling, but exhilarating and rewarding, day at the CIPA Student Conference 2025 in Manchester yesterday. In the session before lunch I was talking about imposter syndrome, and mental health more widely. Many delegates shared with me afterwards that what I said resonated, so I think I am on the right lines. Picture of me gesticulating wildly is included. (Thanks to Michael Evans, Business Development Coach for the pic!) Then after lunch in a complete change of roles it was a joy to be the judge at the Moot Court. It was quite intense to digest all the submissions and produce a substantive judgment straight away, but it was a huge pleasure to see student members of CIPA arguing very persuasively on the issues at such an early stage in their career. Thank you to the organisers and the mooters, and special thanks to the expert witnesses, who had a difficult and rather thankless task. #CIPACS25 The Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys

In the case Babek International Ltd v Iceland Foods Ltd EWHC 547 (IPEC), the High Court upheld the validity of Babek's trade mark, rejecting Iceland's claim of invalidity. The court emphasized that the trade mark met the statutory requirements of clarity and precision, dismissing Iceland's arguments as overly pedantic. Emily Williams reports - https://lnkd.in/eZHtVdjg
